In 2000, the Yankees won the division with 87 wins (Jays won 83). That was the only time in recent memory where it took a mid-80's win total to win the AL East. I doubt we'll see that again any time soon.

And the Yankees still won the World Series.

That year was a fluke...the Yankees has such a low total, not because they were mediocre, but because they didn't care at the end of the season.

They knew they were going to make it, and basically took the foot off the pedal in September.

Otherwise, they would have ended up with 95 wins, just like every other year.

It takes 90+ wins in any division or WC in the AL this whole argument about the AL east never being weak is a flawed argument imo. It hasn't even been the strongest division in the league for awhile, it has been teh Central the last few years and the West before that.

Ted Lilly
2-2
ERA: 2.78
WHIP: 0.97
BB/K: 7/42

Gil Meche
3-1
ERA: 2.15
WHIP: 1.18
BB/K: 14/42

Off to a good start in justifying their contracts.

Why don't the Blue Jays try and develop from within their farm system? The Blue Jays can't spend with the Red Sox or the Yankees, but they should be able to develop from within the farm system as well as those two teams.

At least now Jays can tank for a top 3 pick. Maybe we can draft a player that can turn into a superstar, too bad by the time it happens Roy will be gone and Wells will be old.

We need Colangelo to take over Jays and the Leafs while running the Raptors.

JP will still make the worst pick possible. He's horrible at drafting

I don't see JP sticking long enough to make this pick.

I cant see them firing JP and eating up the next 3+ years of his contract sadly.

But Rogers cannot be too happy with how JP has used his increased payroll.

I wasn't too optimistic about this season and now it seems my predictions are coming to fruition. Our team didn't get significantly better this season (especially our pitching, which might have gotten worse) and now it all looks downhill from here.

This is crazy, so many injuries. Now Glaus might be gone for a while. They should just rest him.

Seems like luck isnt on our side.
I really cant see us turn around by much, and considering we are in the toughest division, it's near impossible that we would make the playoffs.

Let's hope we get a really high draft pick out of this year, and that Ted Rogers will keep the payroll up.

Ouch

It is sad that we're in this division. In other divisions, teams cycle being good and bad. Each team gets a run of a few years. But in the east, we can pretty well expect the Yanks and Sox to be really good, barring injuries....and even then, they can overcome those better than others.

For us to win, we need to be really good...no flukes. Not easy.

I started this thread back at the beginning of the season.

Now that the season is concluding, I was just wondering whether you Jay fans feel more or less hopeless about the Jays in the future? (specifically next year)

I feel even more hopeless now, because it seems fate is conspiring against the Jays.

They had the 3rd best ERA in the MAJORS, only to see their hitting fall by the wayside. What's going to happen next year? Is the starting pitching and hitting going to be amazing, only to see our defense set a record for errors? I hate being a fan of this stupid team.

I can't see us improving that much next year, JP might make a couple move or so but nothing big. He likes the team too much.

In order for us to have a good season next year JP is gonna have to make some move that would impact the team, and the players would have to play to their full potential like Vernon Wells, Frank Thomas, Alex Rios, Ect.
