Why did Moreno get one at bat in the Jays spring training game today instead of playing in this game?

Let's look beyond the headliners at a next up guy who might even be of help this season. For this post, it's Hayden Juenger, the Jays Round 6 pick in 2021 and #26 in the Jays top 30 at MLB Pipeline. He started at NH yesterday, went 3 innings, with no runs or hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.

Here's his MLB Pipeline profile.
Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Working almost exclusively as a reliever at Missouri State, Juenger struck out 31 batters over 21 innings with a 3.86 ERA as a junior coming off a strong sophomore season and stint in the Northwoods League. The Blue Jays selected Juenger in the sixth round, and he made one of the best first impressions in his class -- immediately convincing the organization he was ready for a challenge in ’21. Toronto sent him to High-A Vancouver, where Juenger posted a 2.70 ERA with 34 strikeouts over 20 innings, walking just four batters.

Juenger leads with a fastball that now sits at 95-96 mph and features a good slider as his top secondary pitch. His changeup is still developing and will be key for Juenger long term, but his fastball-slider combo is advanced for this point in his development. Juenger has a smaller build to his six-foot frame, which will be tested when the Blue Jays open with him in what’s expected to be a bulk role in ’22.

If Juenger shows that he’s growing stronger in games, the Blue Jays can begin to bump him up to three and four innings more consistently. If his stuff is playing up in shorter stints, that’s the way the organization will lean. This should benefit Juenger, who could be a very quick riser, especially if he’s shortened into a true reliever at some point over the summer. That seems the likelier path here, making Juenger yet another member of an already exciting ’21 pitching class for Toronto.

Orelvis is legit. He may never hit for high average but I'm totally fine with an alfonso soriano that can play above average defense at either of the 3b/2b.

He already has 4 HR and 2 doubles in 7 games. And not even a full 7 games, given that today’s games were shortened double-header games. He just continues to hit for a tremendous amount of power. Hopefully, he can cut down on the strikeouts.

Threw two more clean innings last night with 4K. Now has 11 K in five innings, yet to give up a hit or run. 1 BB.

Another pitching find in 2021 is Chad Dallas, starting in Vancouver.

That draft produced Gunnar Hoglund, who helped get us Chapman. Ricky Tiedemann may be a top 2-3 starter, Irv Carter is just getting started.

What's intriguing to me is how fast some of these guys could move up a level or two this season. In prospect rankings Tiedemann is already moving ahead of Sem Robberse who is not bad himself, and the injured CJ Van Eyck. Were we to get another haul like this in June with the two comp picks, the system would have some good pitching depth again, both for starting and relieving. Getting one or two of these guys to the bigs in a timely manner would either help offset the cost of extensions for our current vets or fill out trade packages nicely.

It would be nice if Alejandro Kirk caught fire at the plate so we can trade him. Moreno, even without a real spring training, is looking ready. Catching situation at the major league level shouldn't block him after May. He's 7-15 at the plate for BUF.

A late international signing, a Cuban who left that country last year

I guess time to slow down the Orelvis train since his K-rate is back at alarming levels.

Yeah. It was an aggressive move to send him to double-A, tho. So it might take him a while to adjust. I thought they were going to send him to Hi-A.

Logan Warmoth is very much post-prospect status, but he's also off to a very strong start, doing things that he hasn't previously, such as showing a modicum of power and not striking out every second plate appearance. Given that he's now an OF, he may be an injury or two down the depth chart from actually cracking a major league roster (albeit likely very temporarily).

Yes, although I'd like to see him moved up the batting order at BUF to see how we handles the extra pressure.

Samad Taylor is off to a decent start as well, and can play six positions. He's generally hitting in the 2-5 slots.

Both bear watching as injury depth pieces.

Anyone know why Moreno was pulled for a pinch hitter when he was the DH?

“Just looking to make a change”, sounds like complete crap.
