That's...unexpected. The Padres have Tatis at SS, Machado at 3B, and the ROY runner-up in Jake Cronenworth at 2B. Cronenworth can move around, as can Kim, but I'm not sure where exactly they can move to.

Where are the Padres getting all this money they’ve been throwing around the last few years? Didn’t they used to be ... poor?

Not poor. This is a salary dump by the Cubs.

They did get less poor owing to their TV deal back in 2013. And they have done a great job of acquiring talent without totally gutting their farm system, but yeah: they're going to have some decisions to make in relatively short order, unless their pockets are far deeper than people believed. If they're paying all of Darvish's salary, they'll have something in the range of $140m owed to just eight players in 2021: Machado, Myers, Darvish, Hosmer, Snell, Pomeranz, Clevinger and Kim.

Could well be that they have the money, or have the young talent to make it work long-term. And even if they can't keep some of their players when they reach FA, they can likely retool thanks to the guys on the way. The question, as it always is, is whether those resources and their nerve survives if they end up falling short a couple times...which is a distinct possibility going head-to-head with the Dodgers in the NL West.

Maybe Darvish wasn't the right contract for the Jays, but the basis for the trade - helping a team dump significant salary while giving up relatively little in prospect value - is an option many of us have advocated for Toronto.

The Padres will take on approximately $54MM of the $59MM left on Darvish’s deal, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

I kind wanted the Jays to get Kim, I think he would have been the nice, not big splashy free agent get, and where was the Ryu hook up to help this happen lol

Apparently, Kim wanted to come here but San Diego offered him a major league deal with a "no minor league" clause. Also, his family preferred a west coast team, probably because of the weather.

maybe! there was something on social media where Kim was close to a deal with a team but was trying to negotiate a "no minor league" clause. I wouldn't put it pass the Jays to not budge from that. It seems that Atkins and Shaps do not like being strong armed into something and that cost them this 25yo player. now if Kim flunks the test and actually does struggle and refuses the demotion, SD may have some trouble in their hands, our mgmt may look like geniuses.

just get us Springer Bauer and Lindor. thanks.

I'd be surprised if a no-demotion clause was a hard pass for any team chasing him. At the same time, you'd have to imagine that it would be an absolute necessity for him if joining the Padres, given their roster.

Dodgers talking to LeMahieu now lol. Probably seeing how the Padres just upped the ante

MLB rumors: Yankees or Japan for Masahiro Tanaka? Trevor Bauer wants Gerrit Cole coin; George Springer update - nj.com

MASAHIRO TANAKA, RHP

Status: Free agent.

Age: 32 (33 on Nov. 1, 2021).

2020 stats: Yankees, 3-3, 3.56 ERA, 10 starts, 48 IP, 48 hits, 25 runs, 19 ER, 9 HR, 8 BB, 44 K.

The latest: There’s a good chance that Tanaka will either re-sign with the Yankees or play in Japan next season for his old Pacific League team, a source close to the pitcher told NJ Advance Media. The source, who didn’t want his name made public, added that Tanaka wants to return to the Yankees and isn’t interested in playing for a team that won’t contend next season, regardless of money. The source added that it’s unlikely Tanaka will sign with the Angels, who already have fellow Japanese star Shohei Ohtani, a pitcher/designated hitter. Also, the source stated Tanaka has had plans for years to end his playing career with the Rakuten Golden Eagles, his club from 2007-13. Tanaka was good to very good in five of his seven seasons with the Yankees, going 78-46 and a 3.74 ERA pitching with a $155-million contract from 2014-20. Tanaka’s average salary in his last pact surpassed $22M. If he returns to the Yanks, he’ll probably to have to settle for a one- or two-year deal for around $12M annually tops.

That's a really solid deal, especially if there isn't a FA clause after year four. I'd have exceeded that, but that doesn't mean that a team would be smart to exceed that.
