There isn't really that much of a track record to go by when you're talking about Stroman's career. He shut down the Orioles last September, for instance. He just doesn't have that many starts to have a big sample size either way. This year, he hasn't been great against the Orioles, but he really only had one really bad game in there. His other 2 losses against them this year were a blown save by the pen and a game where the Jays were shut out. And Liriano is so up and down that I think suggesting he's reliable enough to be a good bet to recreate a performance, even a recent one, isn't necessarily a great bet. That said, I'm with LLJ here. Neither guy is an ace, but both of them are decent pitchers.
The bigger numbers (on bigger sample sizes) that need to turn around are the likes of Saunders OBPS which is .454 for September/October. Or Russell Martin, who has an OBPS of .625 for that same stretch. Or Donaldson, who had his 2nd worst month of the season during that stretch. Or EE, who also had his second worst month of the season during that stretch. Or Tulowizki, also with his 2nd worst month of the season. If all of these guys are slumping at the same time, they're sitting ducks praying for Texas-style luck in a one-run game.

And hopefully our offense scores more than 1-3 runs.
This is the correct answer. Liriano and Stroman (out of the pen) is the way to go. Seeing how Orioles fair against Lefties, and how Liriano performed against them last week- i would put him in. Do not worry about hurting Stroman's feelings. Liriano should be starting.

Stroman vs Liriano , this is a very interesting comparison.
My off the cuff take is to take Liriano since he was lights out against them just a few days ago and its also the biggest split between the two of them vs Baltimore - they are legit bad against lefty pitching.
Liriano is better in night games than he is in day games. Stroman is the opposite, best in day games. Never really thought about that one before.
Liriano has only the one game vs Orioles. Stroman pitched vs them 4 times this season. An early season win with three ERs, a lost last week and then the other 2 were during his terrible month of June ( by far his worst month of the year).
So were two bad outings then the symptom not having good stuff, or was June so bad cause Baltimore mashes him and he had to face them twice within 10 days?

Re: Wild Card Game: Baltimore @ Toronto | Tuesday, October 4 | TBD
Liriano is the only choice here really imo. Better numbers against the O's, better in September, has pitched in the Wild Card game before with Russell Martin no less. Liriano's bad control is also less of a factor against a free-swinging team like the O's who'll chase pitches near the zone and won't go out of their way to take a walk.
Stroman meanwhile pounds the big part of the strike zone, and gives up a ton of contact (which are usually outs, but could turn into cheap singles and men on base. Which is the last thing you need against a homerun hitting team like the O's).
The cherry on top is the fact that the O's have been mediocre against lefties all season long while crushing righties. By starting Liriano, you can negate Davis and also make sure that newly-minted Blue Jays killer Kim starts on the bench. That last part is very important. That guy has burned us all season long lol.

I think Gibby is making a huge mistake here but I hope that I'm busy eating those words and the laptop I wrote them on tomorrow night around 11 pm.

baseball is such a numbers game, theres more stats and science in baseball than all other sports...and stroman has posted bad numbers against O's all year, and O's hasnt hit lefties well all year, but hey sometimes you just gotta go with the feel

we get to face Tillman and I am sure jays fans know the history against Tillman even though he hasn't been as bad lately but it's still Tillman.

It's Stroman but I'm sure he will have a short leash, and Liriano will be ready out of the bullpen if things go south fast.
Stroman wasn't bad in September so I'm not too worried.
