How much of that contract do we need to eat to make that happen? :o

The 30-year-old southpaw (31 in March) has pitched 291 2/3 innings since heading to Japan. In that time, he’s logged a 2.53 ERA with a 20.9% strikeout rate, 7.9% walk rate and 54.5% ground-ball rate in 48 starts out of the BayStars’ rotation.

So just saying, lets not expect much out of Ponace other than insurance and maybe a bullpen arm.

He was part of the Stroman deal I think?

Yup he and SWR were the returns

Seems like there was a falling out during the playoffs

He definitely didn't agree with bullpen role and then promptly was put on the IL

Apparently it’s down to us and the Mets in the Diaz sweepstakes.

Please Ross get it done!

Let's see how that translates to MLB. I don't think he was signed to be a swing man, but who knows. Maybe Berrios is more injured than they let on, or Bieber. Who knows. Depth is crucial. Even if everyone is healthy this is a more than rational signing. The Jays are going to be a $300M+ spending team, so make sure SP depth is bullet proof.

Could well be overly speculative, but that Bieber option always had a mysterious element to it that's never been fully resolved as of today. He could have still received a better deal, even with a discount, if "he loves it here"

It always made me wonder if there was an injury concern from the Bieber side.
Hope I'm wrong.

If there was an injury concern on Bieber's side, he'd want even more to opt out and sign a longer term deal.

Not necessarily, he might be afraid he won’t even pass the physical.

I’m still not buying it. It would be so out of character for this FO to go after a $100m reliever

If Ed wants to give them 100M to sign a RP, they’ll do it

Actual scouts think Ponce is a MLB starter going forward due to his improved velo and changeup and the projections agree

Jays aren’t giving him 30M to be insurance or a bullpen arm, you can guarantee that. He’s getting every chance to start games in 2026

While it's probably tempting to give a big contract to Diaz after sitting through an entire season of 2025 Jeff Hoffman, I doubt the Jays have any interest in that, and logically, I don't think it would be a smart move. Relievers are too volatile year to year. On top of that he'd cost the Jays their 3rd and 6th round picks. You can rationalize that for Tucker, not so much for a reliever. The Jays have recently been on a velocity kick (Varland, Cease, and Ponce are their last P acquisitions and all are high 90's), so Robert Suarez seems far more likely to be a Jays target.

Any source out there that can confirm that Berrios has demanded a trade? I am not surprised though. Jays need to eat some money to make it happen, and they should do that.

I seriously doubt the Jays will pay 100 million over 5 years for Diaz. I would go after Suarez though. He would go for a similar contract Williams got from the Mets a few days ago.
