Rios: Basball is dead in Toronto - Basketball next?

link“Yeah, there’s no real following here,” Rios told the Sun-Times during the White Sox four-day visit to Toronto that wrapped up Thursday. “There’s a small group of diehards, but it’s hockey, hockey, hockey. It’s gotten sad here. They just don’t really care.”
Is the media killing other sports in this country with their fixation on hockey?

Rios is just bitter that he got booed all 4 games. He was literally crying when they released him last year. Hockey is #1 in this town, but we've proved that we care about baseball and basketball when the ownership doesn't have its head up its ass.

Of course, this isn't news.

This has supposedly been the same story for the last 15 years yet the Raptors are still a big draw and are still profitable. Is this really a valid question to raise again and again?

They traded away Halladay for prospects and essentially told their fans that they have no plans to compete. Plus it's still early in the season, attendance normally picks up once summer starts.

Rios doesn't care about Baseball either. He's just collecting paychecks.

Check the thread on the Jays board for a good deconstruction of this article, plus Joe Cowley's Wikipedia for the reason why he's a useless pile of ****.

Teams with diehard fans still have good attendance regardless of their level of competition, the Jays just haven't had the fan base since the lockout.

Alex Rios? Now if we could only find a sucker to take Hedo off waivers the way those dimwit Sox bought that steaming pile, we'd be going somewhere.

I think he's right. Baseball in general is dead in Toronto but if the team wins the fans will come. Toronto fans will support a winner regardless of the sport but they won't go to a mediocre team's baseball game.

The Blue Jays have become like the Expos...
It is true that the media is killing other sports in this country with their fixation on hockey
but people can think for themselves. Like how the media tried to trash Tiger Woods but
most people still love him.
Its a combination of things....
J.P Riccardis tenure killed a lot of the franchise
SkyDome aka Rogers Center became out dated rather fast
Baseball not having a Salary Cap
Being in the American League East
17 years of not making the Playoffs
Bad Parking
Expensive Food and Beverages
And the biggest reason is Toronto's high Immigration rate. Most European, Asian, and Indian
communities are not interested in baseball.

Back in the day I was a bigger Blue Jay fan then, than I am a Raptors fan today.
I used to watch and/or attend 162 Jays game every season. But I haven't been at Rogers Centre for 3 years and no more than 5 times in a decade. I haven't watched a full game on TV in years.
It comes down to a franchise that has been out of the post-season for 17 years and is unlikely to be back anytime soon.
Why do I want to support the Blue Jays when its a virtual lock that the World Series will be won by a team from New York, Boston, Chicago or LA?

That's a pretty bold statement considering he plays during the summer months where NHL is in its offseason. Still, the NHL offseason is like the MLB all star game over here.

Not in the slightest...perhaps that lowers in baseball on a percentage basis, but with the population of the GTA skyrocketing in the past two decades while the capacity of the Rogers Centre remains unchanged, it shouldn't make the slightest difference in attendance.

In May 2004 while traveling with the White Sox on a road trip to Toronto, Cowley made disparaging remarks about the city of Toronto in a radio interview, calling it
“nothing but a city in a third-world country.” Subsequently during the series in Toronto, Cowley refused to stand for the Canadian national anthem prior to a game. Toronto Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey described Cowley as having “bad manners” and had letters of complaint sent to both Cowley and his publisher over the incident.
Cowley gained notoriety nationally when he admitted on Tuesday Nov. 21, 2006 on the Mike and the Mad Dog show, which is heard on WFAN New York, to be the only writer to vote Derek Jeter in sixth place on the American League MVP ballot. However, if Cowley had placed Jeter first on the ballot, Justin Morneau still would have won.
That was the second such incident for Cowley; after omitting Blue Jays players Carlos Delgado and Vernon Wells, two top-ten overall finishers, from his 2003 AL MVP ballot, the Chicago chapter suspended him from voting the next year.[/quote]
