2. Scott Downs, LHP, Blue Jays — He is being looked at by the Phillies, who would love to add a lefty in the pen with J.C. Romero out. Nothing is likely to happen soon as the Jays are off to a reasonably good start, but he is a player who could bring value to the Jays if they decide to sell off.

The Phillies are looking at Blue Jays left-hander Scott Downs, according to the Boston Globe.

Philadelphia wants to add a lefty to the bullpen with J.C. Romero out due to injury.

Nothing is imminent with Toronto playing well, but things could change if they begin to struggle.

I woul expect the Jays to seel off all of their bullpen assets by the end of the year. Downs, Frasor and Gregg are the most likely to go by the deadline. This is really a position of strength for the Jays and all three of them are veterans that are not going to be with the team long term. Downs would be extremely valuable to a contender.

With the way relief pitching is valued around the league, especially in the NL, I would expect that the Jays would net a nice return as well. Maybe a top prospect or a major league ready kid?

I don't imagine anything will happen until the All-star break at the earliest though. More than likely the deadline though.

Whatever is offered will have to be considerably better than the 2 draft picks Downsie will get us after this year. The Phillies system is still pretty good despite the beating they took in the Cliff Lee and Doc Halladay trades, they lost a lot of their major league ready prospects but they have high upside guys in the lower minors that would fit with AA's vision. If you wanna get someone good, the Blue Jays would probably have to pay Downs' salary, throw in another arm like Camp/Tallet/Accardo and probably a mid level prospect.

I'm not sure that we'd have to throw that much into the pot, given that the team on the receiving end can likely recoup a good portion of the purchase price from the compensatory picks. I'd love to get Gose, though...he's high-risk, but could turn into a player similar to Devon White (though without the surreal defense).

Schad, I was thinking of Gose too. I wanted him in the original deal instead of Happ. I actually think the Phillies will end up trading for a starter. Have you seen Jamie Moyer recently? Like last night? Plus Jay "too good to be traded for Roy Halladay" Happ is bound for a correction, Blanton is still out, and no one knows what Hamels will be going forward. They need a starter badly, maybe two, if they want to contend.

Yeah, no doubt, but their relief corps is equally bad...Madson's solid, but Durbin is shaky, Baez is awful, and Herndon/The Bastard/Romero are question marks. And right now, we have nothing but young guys that we want to keep, and scrap-heap pickups, so unless they've been blown away by Eveland, we don't have much to offer by way of starters.

Re: Happ, he has the most bizarre line I've ever seen: 10.1 IP, 9 hits, 8 walks, 5 Ks...1 unearned run. That's unpossible.

I think that was the idea with having Bautista lead off. We're trying to take some of these scrapheap guys and pump their value. Like imagine how valuable a guy like Bautista would be if he could look decent at the plate?

:o :o

Okay, that's ridiculous so I looked up his gamelog. Game 1 is reasonable-lucky but reasonable (5ip, 6h, 2bb, 5k). He scattered some hits, but nothing crazy, only 1 XB hit in the bunch and the 'stros went 0for10 with RISP.

Game 2 is game one, but taken to extreme limits. Still only 1 double, and only 3 hits total, but he walked 6 in 5.1. These two were against HOU and WAS. He puts this many on against anyone with an actual MLB quality lineup and he's going to get destroyed.

That WT piece is funny. Anybody could have had Downs a couple of times already and passed on him recently. 2 weeks into the season and we get this lame rumour? Funny how so many teams whine about their bullpen (middle relief) yet dont spend any money to fix it.
