Shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria has now played 16 games for class-A Dunedin and reviews this week on the Cuban defector are glowing.

“I saw him twice and he reminded me of a young Tony Fernandez,” said a former GM, “both his actions in the field and with the bat.”

Another evaluator didn’t like the Hechavarria-Fernandez comparison.

“He’s stronger than Fernandez,” said a veteran scout. “He’s a live wire, with a good looking, live body. Everything he does has some zest and pop to it. He fields the ball well, he’s not going to be a home run hitter, but the ball comes off his bat well. He’s wiry. Wiry strong.”

The right-handed hitter arrived at the Bobby Mattick facility after Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos signed him to a four-year, $10-million US deal in March, standing 5-foot-11, weighing 178 pounds.

“I saw him hit balls down the left-field line, right-field line and into the gaps,” said the evaluator. “If you see him in a uniform, you’d think skinny, but he has long, loose muscles.”

Hechavarria is hitting .281 (18-for-64) for Dunedin with three doubles, three triples and six RBIs. He has one stolen base, a walk and eight strikeouts.

When the Jays outbid the New York Yankees for the free-agent he was compared to many, from Alfredo Griffin to Julio Lugo, from Edgar Rentaria to Alfonso Soriano.

The comparison to Soriano led some to believe Hechavarria would not be able to handle playing short and a move to the outfield was in his future.

“If he doesn’t wind up in the infield, then I’ve never seen an infielder,” said the scout. “When you see him, you’ll like him. Guaranteed.”

Hechavarria had three hits, including a double and a triple Tuesday, doubled Wednesday and tripled Thursday.

So, when does he make the move to double-A New Hampshire?

The Jays say, in the case of double-A New Hampshire right-hander Kyle Drabek, 22, and Hechavarria, 21, both are “very good ages for their respective leagues and there is not any urgency to move either.”

pretty interesting comparison future looking bright

Everything I've read about him tells me he has an ideal body type for a SS. Lean and tensile, not too tall or short, and breakaway speed going by those triples. He has some errors but that stuff works itself out.

I keep looking for video of him since he started in our system but I can't find any. Not even a picture. Batter's Box needs to hook us up.
