Kevin Gregg awful on back to backs

Post#1 » by darth_federer » Wed Jun 2, 2010 5:04 pm

Just watched Kevin Gregg give up four earned runs to the Rays. I also remember Kevin Gregg blowing a save against Seattle in early May under similar circumstances, the inability to find the strike zone. Although it did appear as though the umpire might have hosed him on a couple of calls. These two blown saves, if I have remembered the Seattle game correctly, have occurred on the second night of a back to back appearance for Kevin Gregg. I was wondering if you had the numbers for Gregg's second appearance after working the night before and do you think it might be a good idea to give the closing duties to someone else to avoid the back to back appearances for Gregg in save situations?

Thanks, Matt

A: The last time that Gregg managed to record a save on back-to-back days was July 25-26, 2009 for the Cubs. Since then including the torching on June 1, Gregg has pitched two days in a row a total of 11 times. His record on the second night of those 11 back-to-backs: 1-3; 3 Saves; 4 BlSv; 10.00 ERA; 9IP: 11H; 10R; 10ER; 10BB; 11SO.
Note that the three saves just means that on the first night of the back-to-backs it was not a save situation. This season for the Jays in the second game of his six-back-to-back appearances he has a 13.50 ERA with seven hits and 10 walks in 5.1 innings. I believe Cito Gaston should give Gregg the weekend off against the Yankees, going with Scott Downs, Jason Frasor, Shawn Camp and maybe Casey Janssen with the game on the line.

Maybe this is something we should be looking at before throwing Gregg out there for every save situation.

There are posters who had already noticed this. How is it that the manager of our team has not?

He's awful period. Can't believe this guy is a starting closer in the bigs.

Probably just sample size...here are his numbers over the course of his career, on X days of rest:

0 days: .233/.318/.307: .625 OPS, 2.15 K/BB, 4 HRs over 391 PAs.

1 day: .232/.305/.376: .681 OPS, 2.95 K/BB, 11 HRs over 483 PAs.

2 days: .233/.329/.361: .690 OPS, 1.9 K/BB, 9 HRs over 432 PAs.

3 days: .273/.335/.444: .779 OPS, 2.76 K/BB, 8 HRs over 224 PAs.

Looks like he's a little better on back-to-backs, though there isn't a hell of a lot to choose between 0/1/2 days.

We're talking about Cito Gaston right?

Cito doesn't even take notice of the righty/lefty splits on his hitters so he definitely hasn't dug into the stats deep enough to figure this part out.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.
I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

Trade for a Closer? Promote someone who is good for 3 innings. Also some blame goes to VDubs for blowing that hit into center which scored the game winning run. I really hoped that Hill/Lind or Batista could of saved us last night. Shut out of the Rays tonight is a must.

These weren't the comments I was reading from a month or so ago.
