Q - projected arrival of Wallace/Departure of Overbay?

Post#1 » by Brew666 » Fri Jun 11, 2010 8:11 pm

There are quite a few knowledgable people on this board and I'm wondering what the general consensus is for Brett Wallace's arrival?

I know he's lighting up (maybe exaggerated) AAA right now and Overbay hasn't been playing great but it seems that the Jays are more likely to use someone with less options (Overbay in this case) and maintain their depth. I don't think we're serious contenders this year and I'd rather see Wallace gain MLB experience as opposed to Overbay taking away time. It seems that Wallace is ready and Overbay is the only thing in his way right now. I can't imagine Overbay having much (if any) trade value but if we're unable to get rid of him by trade deadline does this mean Wallace will stay in AAA until September when roster sizes are increased? Barring injury, I can't see Wallace making his debut any earlier than July and maybe even as late as September. I guess the other factor would be the team is still in the 'race' (I think it's a joke that Toronto media is even using this word right now) and maybe their just waiting for the wheels to fall off (or Blue Jays management believes they're this good). He's still young and no rush to bring him in but someone at Overbay's caliber shouldn't be standing in his way either.

Thoughts, suggestions, complaints?

I think Wallace only comes up if he's going to be playing every day, and that doesn't happen until Overbay is gone. It would be useless to have him up and sharing time with Overbay. But he will probably get a cup of coffee in September regardless. I think I also read something about AA wanting him to get more reps at 1B and Wallace himself not being comfortable there yet. That might be the bigger issue.

Brett Wallace isn't exactly "lighting up" AAA, his K/BB isn't that great neither are his lefty/righty splits and home/away splits.

In 2011, as per what AA said at the start of the year.

Jays are in a tough position. Management needs to wait for the players to fall out of the "race" before they can start bringing up players like they're out of it. But they won't put a rook at 1st base as long as they're close in the race.

With that said, he's doing much better than Michael Taylor, and he's the younger player as well. Looks like a good trade.
