A little off topic, but does anyone have an answer for this one? How does one of the greatest hitters of all time last till the 13th round?

He played at a small community college against lesser competition, so teams discounted his stats. Think that I've also read that many teams assumed that he'd be jumping to a four-year college...St. Louis almost allowed him to slip through too, so it wasn't as if they were aware that they'd drafted one of the greatest hitters ever.

It's the amazing thing about sports. The best picks aren't always the best picks and sometimes you end up with diamond in the rough.

As alarming as Mike Piazza being drafted in the 62nd round, and only as a favour to his dad.

Why was Russ Adams picked in the first round?...... why was David Cooper picked in the first round?.... why was Filepe Lopez picked in the first round?

hhhmmm..............

----------------------------------------------------------------------

where ur picked dosent guarantee success, same as how low u pick dosent mean u will be worse than the guys picked ahead of u.

Every team picks in the first round hoping for a star.... reality most will not reach that potential and many will never see the Majors at all..... same goes for low picks. Some of the top players in the league were picked very low

the odd of a top pick being a everyday MLB regular r higher, but that dosent mean a low, say 13th rounder, cant be a star

*** the fact he is one of the ALL_TIME best is shocking, ill admit

because the baseball draft is a complete crapshoot. out of all 4 NA sports, the MLB draft is probably the one where it has more to do with luck than scouting skills.

sometimes big talent drop on the board because of signability. most of the time, the teams with high picks are often teams with a small payroll. they cant afford to pay big bonuses to rookies. so even though u have the #1 pick, you don't take the best player available because you can't afford him. which is why baseball should implement a rookie salary system. but thats another story.

Wasn't the case with Pujols...he signed for something like $60,000, and St. Louis was hesitant to even give him that.

Signability can be an issue for as much as the first 3-5 rounds. When you are talking 13th round+, it has nothing to do with signability.

the signabilty point had more to do with the imbalance of the draft rather than Pujols.

Baseball drafts are the biggest crapshoot of all the professional sports. On the flip side, just look at how many top 3 picks never played a single MLB game.
