OT: Blue Jays drop big bucks on Venezuelan teen prospects

The Blue Jays might not want to spend money recklessly, but they sure don’t mind gambling.

Tuesday they bet big on a pair of Venezuelan teenagers, lavishing a combined $3.5 million in signing bonuses on pitcher Adonis Cardona and third baseman Gabriel Cenas, both 16.

During a conference call to discuss the signings general manager Alex Anthopoulos confirmed publish reports that Cardona, a hotly recruited prospect that rumours had linked with the Jays since last October, will receive $2.8 million to sign. Cenas, meanwhile signed for $700,000 (all figures U.S.)

Is that a lot of money to spend on a pair of prospects who are barely old enough to drive?

Of course it is, but Anthopoulos says the potential payoff justifies the gamble.

“Anytime you’re dealing with a 16-year-old there’s an element of risk,” Anthopoulos said. “In a lot of ways it’s like buying a stock. If you want to buy a stock when it’s already established you’re probably going to have a hard time doing so, but if you can do it early enough and you decide the cost makes sense and there’s a significant upside... that’s something we look at.”

The signings also send a clear message to the rest of Major League Baseball that the Jays are again big players on the international free agent scene, committed to finding talented players and ready to write fat cheques to acquire them.

Except the difference is we were owned by Labatt during our glory years, not Rogers. This team is a staple for cross promotion and brand recognition...not for winning titles.

^ lol, going along with your stupid premise, what exactly would be the best way to attain effective cross promotion and brand recognition with a baseball team other then fielding a contender? To not care about winning, draw 10k per game, and have no one care about the team? Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

Cool. I hope one of them turns out to be a fairly good prospect in the high-minors in a few years.

What is a 16 year old going to do with 2.8 million dollars?

A ridiculous amount of that money gets filtered down to agents, handlers, development people, the academies they play with, parents, coaches etc etc. There are a lot of people that benefit from the bonuses that international free agents get and that's why they're so against a world draft or an expanded draft. Something like that would stop the money that gets pumped into developing these kids and would devastate baseball in these countries and it happened in Puerto Rico when the (Please Use More Appropriate Word) Bud Selig decided to expand the draft.

Has anyone heard if the league is investigating on the tampering allegations towards AA? I recall reading some other GMs thought AA was already working on a deal w/ Cardona and if he was signed Jul 2, some people were going to be knocking on Selig's door. He wasn't signed Jul 2 but curious if anything came of this.

Nothing came of it because every team does that every year.

Is this all the Jays are doing in Int'l free-agency or are they expected to sign more guys? (I've seen some news but it's hard to keep track of all of this stuff).

Two other players I've heard mentioned with the Jays are: Pedro Perez, a 3B from Colombia. Luis Heredia, a Mexican pitcher, who can't sign with a team until August when he turns 16.

I don't mind signing the kid. as long as we start winning, spend some money on prospects are fine. But my question is, whats the point of a mlb draft. Like teams can sign 16 yr olds and stuff. It like nba teams can sign john wall when hes 16 or like taylor hall.

These are international players. It would be like signing Darko when he was 16 and nothing like Hall or Wall. Schadenfreude already explained why international players not being in the draft is a good thing.

Am I the only one that thought the title said "Vuvuzela"? :(

That's good news... I remember the few things I found on Int'l signings seemed to have the Jays as "real players" for virtually every prospect on BA's top-25. I know I'm being greedy, but if they came out with only two players, I'd be disappointed. Even though one of those is extremely highly touted.
