I know he retired from the Star just over a week ago. Is being an official scorer a full-time gig (ie. all home games this season? next season?)
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=300808114Official scorer Dave Perkins, a retired Toronto Star writer working just his third game, wasted no time in making the call.
“I won’t lose any sleep over it. That’s a base hit all the way,” Perkins said.

I think he said he's doing a handful of games on the radio, but not 100% on that.

if we gave hill the error and morrow got the no hitter, it wouldn't feel the same, cuz the official scorer being from toronto and being biased towards the call....

Yeah and imagine the million headlines and all the controversy that would emerge from that.

No doubt about it, that was the right call.
If Hill makes the catch though, I think he had a 50-50 chance at making that play. That said, many 2B's don't even get to that ball. Hopefully he doesn't let that effect his play going forward - they got the win, after all, which is what counts most.

Based on how close Longoria was to first when the ball hit Hill's glove, I don't think he had any chance at all. His only hope in hell was to catch it and fling it with this glove all in one motion - Johnny Mac or Escobar style but even harder because he's like 30 feet away.
The risk of the runners taking an extra base would make attempting that pretty stupid in a 1-0 game.
But it's one of those what if scenarios that make the game interesting.

man imagine if hill did come up with the ball... it would have been a bang bang play and i bet the ump calls him out though

It would have been a very close play if Hill had come up with that. And after what happened in Detroit after that guy was robbed of a no-hitter by that bad call... can you imagine what this one would have been like....

Even if Hill got to the ball cleanly, Longoria would've been safe anyways.
