Overbay has cleared waivers already: deal coming?

From Jon Morosi

Then it would be a good idea to have a veteran first baseman around -- someone like Toronto’s Lyle Overbay.

Overbay has already cleared trade waivers, according to one major-league source. Like Peña, Overbay is an excellent defender. And he’s hitting .285 since June 1.

As for the money: Overbay will earn a little more than $2 million between now and the end of the season, before becoming a free agent.

Overbay, 33, is the type of player who’s often traded in August...

the baseball waiver system is so strange.
its like this grand secret as to who's passed waivers and who hasn't.
but from what i understand, tonnes of players pass waivers and are never picked up. its not like hockey, where waivers = end of your career. in baseball, waivers = everyday back-end-of-season occurrence for high salary players. like, Vernon Wells is def a waiver player

I'm surprised he cleared waivers, what with his high OPS in the clutch and his slick fielding. Teams must employ pro scouts and actually watch the games, so they can see that he's completely useless.

He cleared waivers because of his contract. This isn't a sign that deal is imminent, it only means that he can now be traded to another team without restrictions.

I wouldn't be surprised for some National League team to trade for him. A defensive 1b, left handed bat, nice to have off the bench for the playoff push.

if there is a team that he could get traded to that wants him, why wouldnt that team claim him off waivers instead of trading a player for him after he clears waivers?

Because they might not want to pay his entire contract and will basically get him for free in a trade, anyway.

That's because JP isn't our GM anymore!

Are you implying he wouldn't have out him on waivers, or that he would have said something? Either way, no.

I think it's because JP would have said something.

Overbay is doing his annual good stretch. I don't hate the guy like alot of fans, but if he does go then we can keep JP up and have Buck/Lewis in the DH role for the rest of the season. I think it would be close to an optimal offensive lineup.

JP would have said something.

Just like everyone knew Wells and Rios were on waivers.

AA is much more professional.

Overbay's undoubtedly been on waivers many times before and we've never heard about it....so yeah, no.

All right. But you'd be wrong then. It's common for GMs to try to pass most of their players through waivers (especially guys with contracts like Overbay).

I dont disagree that it is common.
I am saying if JP was still GM this year, he would have been on the FAN telling everyone the day Overbay was put on waivers.

We wouldn't have found out about it after he already cleared.

Now, go ahead and post something else to argue what I have just said.
(It's not going to change my opinion, but I know it's something you love to do when someone doesn't agree with you)

Your JP hate is causing you to miss the obvious point here (that Overbay has been put on waivers countless times before without the guy telling the media about it), so I'll stop bothering with it.

Overbay has never been the same hitter he was since that hand injury a year or year and half ago.
