Romero largest guarantee ever for pitcher with less than 2 yrs of ML service.
Does this buy out Romero's arbitration years and then add on two more? He would have been eligible for arbitration after 2011, so do we have him under control until the end of 2016 season?
I know a lot of people don't like giving pitchers too many guaranteed years but i think Alex might have perfectly balanced risk versus reward here. Ricky could always get hurt but 30 milion dollars of dead money doesn't destroy a franchise and if he stays perfectly healthy we could a 100 million dollar value out of it.

Basically buys out his arbitration years and 1 year of FA I think

Excellent!! I think it's a fair deal.
and from what I've seen Romero is happy to be here. You can see him on the sidelines when he's not pitching cheering on his teammates. Example, the Aaron Hill defensive toss last night, u can see after the replay Romero pumping his fist. This is the type of player you want on your team.

It has to be two more years of FA after arbitration, Ricky would still make the league minimum next year after which he would have 3 years of arbitration. So we probably bought out those three years and tacked on two more.

Romero deal runs from 2011 to '15. #BlueJays #MLB
damn, so we don't get him for the league minimum next year, we only control him for more year than we would have if we took him into arbitration.

Very happy to have him locked up - important piece....
Remember when Gillick refused to sign any pitcher for a term greater than 2 years??? LOL.

"That's a nice team friendly contract.
Last year Ricky racked up 2.7 WAR worth $12.3m.
So for this year Ricky's racked up 3.4 WAR worth $13.7m
He's going to be underpaid for the next 5 years unless he suffers an arm injury.

In which case, he's going to be a millstone contract around AA's neck. This is not without major risk.

Frankly, Romero
right now reminds me of the young Javier Vasquez with the Expos. He could come in an stone a good team one night, and then in his next start have his headed to him before the fifth inning. Top pitching prospects can break either way, with the added risk of injury. AA does have an aggressive approach, but if you take too many big risks, the odds suggest some spectacular flameouts.

Sure, but he was going to be underpaid anyway for 4 of the years.
I mean, it may be good value, but you would have to ask Tom Tango to work it out... which we quite possibly did!

It's nice to see that we locked up a major piece for this rebuild. I don't like how we removed 2 of those minimum salary years... but meh, I'll wait 'til the resident masterminds post so I can get the whole picture.

Romero will receive a $1.25MM bonus, according to Toronto GM Alex Anthopoulous via conference call. The lefty will earn $750K in 2011, $5MM in 2012, and $7.5MM each year from 2013 through 2015. The option in 2016 will be for $13MM with a $600K buyout.
Bam!

It's just one minimum salary year. That's just the cost of business for the cost certainty that comes with buying out the arbitration years and a FA year. Ideally you'd do it after the minimum salary years are over but they chose cost certainty. It's not a greatly team friendly deal but we will still end up paying well below what he will be worth over that time. I do like that buyout in the option year is cheap at only 600k.
