Snider as leadoff man
I'm surprised there isn't already a topic on this madness. Batting MacDonald second was bad enough but this is almost worse as it could impact a top prospect's development. Cito is bat **** crazy and needs to be stopped.
I might be overreacting but I don't think so.
Thoughts?

Re: Snider as leadoff man
this is true. ideally i'd like to see snider in the 6-8 spot.
but what can the jays do? if not playing lewis, there's no running threat at all. i'm very surprised at how little escobar steals, but i think he would be the ideal candidate for lead off.

Cito's a naked raving lunatic. He sticks Snider leadoff just to mark his territory.

Re: Snider as leadoff man
I don't think it's that ludicrous .
When Lewis is out of the line-up, there really isn't another logical choice on this team. Heck, Jose Bautista was our leadoff guy before we aquired Lewis.
Besides, you only lead off once in the game. Otherwise, you can look at it as Snider possibly getting more at-bats.

I think you're right. We only scored 2 runs tonight so Cito will think we need the offense.
Maybe Johhny Mac will be leading off for us. That should be a treat.

Why would it heart his development at all? The leadoff man gets the most at bats and everything else is irrelvent, would you rather him bat ninth behind Jose molina?

Re: Snider as leadoff man
Why is Snider playing 3 times a week, Lewis sits and Overbay gets at bats every day? I'm done scratching my head at the way Cito manages this line up. All I can do is hope and pray AA finds the right guy for the job and Cito doesnt pull a Favre and come back next year.

Wells
Overbay
Snider
Arencibia or Buck
I can live with Buck for the rest of the year give JP till sept for his call -up, n for mine Edwin is riding the pine moving Jose to 3B giving Snider n Lewis everyday playing time.

Re: Snider as leadoff man
When Lewis is out of the lineup, I'd put Escobar up there. He does have a career .OBP in the .360 region IIRC, and is currently hitting over .300. Sure he doesn't have a lot of speed, but neither does anyone else on the team.
Then I'd bat Overbay second. He's a decent .OBP this year, and a much better one over his career. That would open up the 7'th slot for Snider.
Escobar
Overbay
Bautista
Wells
Lind
Hill
Snider
Buck
Encarnacion

I remember the fan interviewing him regarding batting lead off (sorry no link), and he did mention that he has a different approach batting lead off.

Not an unreasonable suggestion - I just like the RLRLRL aspect this way. Plus Vernon hasn't seemed to hit worth crap for 2 months. Snider's gonna be more of a threat starting next year.

Re: Snider as leadoff man
15 years from now, when Snider's career is done, someone will run the numbers to see where he's hit in the batting order over his career. So it will be like 600 games at 4th, 400 games at 3rd, 200 at 5th etc... then you'll see like 15 games at lead-off and it will just blow someone's mind that someone would ever bat him leadoff.
Cito has a long history of being a contrarian with his leadoff batter - Devon White wasn't the logical choice in the early 90s.
I hate Overbay but if you have to give him 30 at bats a week, and he's going to try to draw a walk every time no matter the situation, then putting him at the 2 spot might limit the damage he does to the franchise.

I've been watching every at bat of his and he's hitting the way he's always hit even at the leadoff spot which is being very aggressive early in the count and looking to protect when he goes down 0-2, 1-2. Its the same approach as Escobar, its like their plate vision and pitch recognition gets better when they go down in the count and they learn to layoff close pitches but somehow hack at pitches out of the zone early in the count.

Re: Snider as leadoff man
I think you're overreacting a bit, but I also agree with you: I don't like Snider leading off, at all.
I've been a bit surprised at how often he's benching Lewis over the others, but when he's sitting, I'd agree with the previous posters that Escobar should move up, and Overbay or Hill hit 2.

Good Lord, the little stoner's got a point.
