“He’s in a tough role out there, he’s a guy that I save back when I hear something about one of my pitchers maybe not feeling well,” said Gaston. “It hasn’t really been fair to him.”
Nor has it been good for Tallet’s performance.
The 32-year-old, who made at least 44 appearances in each season from 2006-2008 and never posted an ERA higher than 3.81, is now 2-6 with a 6.21 ERA.
His problems seemed to begin last season when he spent most of the year doing a credible job as a starter, though he finished the season 7-9 with a 5.32 ERA.
This year, Tallet made the rotation after spring training and made three starts before going on the disabled list with tightness in his elbow.
Upon returning in June, Tallet made two more starts before going back to the bullpen.
“He’s been a great trooper on the club, he doesn’t say a word, just goes out there ant takes the ball,” Gaston said. “And then there are times that he’ll tell me he can go another inning or two, I just tell him ‘No, that’s enough.’ ”
Based on comments from Gaston and Tallet, it could be argued that the Oklahoma native has done enough in 2010 and could use a rest.
