Gregg closing in on career year

Kevin Gregg was not promised the closer's role when he penned his name on a one-year pact with the Blue Jays last winter. The veteran reliever was not awarded the job after piecing together a strong showing in Spring Training, either.
Gregg did not complain. He just waited for his opportunity.
Now, with roughly one month left on the schedule, Gregg is entrenched as the Jays' stopper, quietly fashioning the best season of his career. There have been a handful of ugly turns along the way, but Gregg's overall body of work has been solid in his inaugural tour with Toronto.
"He's done a good job for us," Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said. "Without him, we wouldn't have a lot of these wins. He's had trouble at times, but most of of the time he's done a good job. He's only had a few bad times out there."
No one is perfect.
On Saturday, Gregg took the mound at Rogers Centre, clinging to a 5-4 lead over the Tigers with two outs and a man on second base. One run had just crossed the plate on a double yielded by the closer. Unfazed, Gregg needed only four pitches to strike out Detroit's Ramon Santiago, sealing the win and collecting a save.
It was not necessarily pretty, but it was effective.
That, in a sense, has been the story of Gregg's season.
That save against the Tigers was the 30th of the year for Gregg, marking his most since saving a career-best 32 as a closer for the Marlins in 2007. Gregg's total this year is made more impressive when considering he did not receive the primary ninth-inning duties until mid-April.

His numbers are ok but somewhat deceiving, and boy does he ever make games close.
Jays haven't a had a legit closer since the Henke/Ward era...watching DW set it up for the Terminator was pure magic.

Gregg "closing" in on career year... Ah, I see what you did there. Job well done.

@EZ - I think both Koch and Ryan qualify as 'legit' closers... just maybe not up to your very high standards.

Oh Billy Koch, I'll never forget the tirade he went on after we cut him in 04'.

BJ was definitely a legit closer his first year. Then the Mitchell Report came out, he got busted for PEDs, and the injuries destroyed him. Once he lost it, he was just another Gagne - but he was one of the best closers in the Major Leagues his first year in Toronto.

When did BJ Ryan get busted for PED's? He wasn't even named in the mitchell report, that doesn't mean he didn't use PED's but i would be really surprised if he did. He regressed after his amazing 06 season because he got injured, he was never a guy that relied on a fastball velocity so you can't say it was because he wasn't doign PED's anymore(nor do PED's necessarily help a guy throw faster). He was a guy that had amazing fastball command, he could locate pitches anywhere he wanted on both sides of the plate and he was deceptive but his command and control just never returned after the injuries which happens quite frequently.

Koch was great when he was only throwing fastballs. Then they decided to include more pitches in his repertoire and he was never the same.

And it was his mechanics that caused his injury problems.

Not going to lie...watching Ward and Henke definitley spoiled us, as that was probably the best setup/closer tandem i've seen.
And I should rephrase my comments on the "legit starter"...as what I meant to say, is that we never had that type of success in any of the closers beyond that. Koch, Ryan, and hell, even Randy Myers were legit closers.
