Romero deal a steal for Jays

There is a growing sense, watching Ricky Romero pitch, that the Toronto Blue Jays made an excellent decision locking the lefthander up with a five-year contract earlier this season.
Nobody can guarantee Romero is going to become a 20-game winner and Cy Young candidate like former Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay. But the 25-year-old is offering a certain sense of security to the Major League Baseball club.
Romero allowed just one run in seven innings -- the eighth time in 10 starts Romero has pitched at least seven innings -- as Toronto beat the Texas Rangers 7-2 on Monday.
The Jays are now 6-1 this season against the American League West Division leaders.
Romero, meanwhile, is 12-8 on the season, one win shy of the 13 he had as a rookie last year.
Opposing teams are discovering similarities in Halladay and Romero: Get to them early or let the game pass you by.

A good pitcher is a steal only until Tommy John comes calling.
Hopefully Romero has a durable arm.

Tommy John will suck, but pitchers coming off TJ still perform to their previous level, if not become even better pitchers.

Its the year long re-hab that worries me.

I dont see Romero needing TJ surgery in the future, based on my memory, most pitchers who come down with injuries requiring the surgery are usually flamethrowers and Romero is definitely not one of those.
Besides why even bring that up?
Let's just enjoy the fact we have him and he's locked into a good contract for an extended period of time.

Jesse Litsch, Marcum, Drabek, arn't exactly flamethrowers.
I think potential injury is relevent to the discussion of a long term contract. Especially at a position that frequents injury.

You're right there, and of course potential injury always factors into it. But its not as though Romero's contract is some albatross that would hinder us for years financially like others have.
Plus the comment originally seemed to imply that TJ was inevitable, which is clearly not the case.

I'd throw Drabek in the flamethrower category, in last nights playoff game he was consistently hitting 94-94 and as high as 98.
