Yankees coach linked to Jays managerial opening

Rob Thomson is “expected to receive consideration” for the Blue Jays job after Cito Gaston retires. Thomson managed the Yankees for three games in 2008, becoming the first Canadian to manage in the big leagues since 1934.

I wouldnt mind Girardi here he seems like a real "players" manager, but I see him going to the Cubs.

Go get Joe Torre now. The Dodgers already showed him the door by giving the job next year to Mattingly.

I could honestly see the next manager being hired from within. I dont know if AA goes and makes a splash by grabbing a top tier manager.

My thoughts exactly. I really don't see us going after a big name for our next manager. I'm guessing we hire from within or get an up and coming guy from another organization.

Roberto Alomar should be an assistant at the MLB level...... that guy is future manager and it should be with the Jays.....
he is experienced veteran, who not only won the championship but also was a star of the team, which happened to be the TORONTO BLUE JAYS!

Stars almost universally make bad managers, and I doubt expect Robbie to be an exception; he was just too naturally gifted. Guys like that just get frustrated in the long run when their players don't live up to their high expectations.
Also, Joe Torre is way old, and even if he isn't retiring, he's not taking a job this year, certainly not with someone who isn't a WS contender.

Yeah, the goal has to be to get someone young who'll be there in 3-4 years (we're not going to be that good next year), to provide some continuity. Torre isn't that guy.

I want someone to build with the team, like Maddon with the Rays. Torre is for a contender with a 3-year window, he is not a fit here.
I also dont want to hire a Canadian simply because of their nationality.

If the Cubs dont hire Sandberg, he would be the perfect fit IMO. He has put in his time managing in the minors and has been very successful.

I want a vet coach, where there's no question on whether or not he can handle a clubhouse. Just like I'd say with the Raps, it's important to eliminate excuses for not winning. We can't afford to have a first time big league manager who after a couple of years we realize he's just better in the minors or as a bench coach (ahem, Jay Triano...)

Wouldn't mind this hire - what better hire then to hire someone from one of your rivals I say.
