Gaston content to retire on his own terms

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Mon Sep 20, 2010 11:09 pm

One month from now, as another summer ends and a chill begins to bite the autumn air, Cito Gaston plans on finding comfort on the beaches of Hawaii. Across the ocean, baseball will be holding its annual postseason party.

It seems a fitting first step for Gaston, who knows the time is right for welcoming retirement. He felt forced onto that island more than a decade ago, but things are different now. Gaston is stepping aside as manager of the Blue Jays, and he is doing so on his terms.

That includes, before anything else, a week spent surrounded by palm trees, sunshine and, most importantly, some close friends.

"We've been planning it for a while," said Blue Jays bench coach Nick Leyva, who paused before offering a smirk. "He finally came through with his word."

Leyva paused and quickly took a grateful tone.

"He's such a generous man," Leyva said.

All Gaston has brought to Toronto are a pair of World Series championships and more than 900 victories over two stints as the manager of the ballclub. His reputation has been built around those two titles in 1992-93, but his contributions to the Blue Jays' organization extend beyond those glory years.

His name has become synonymous with Blue Jays baseball, and he has made a home in Toronto for years, often referring to Canada as his second home. Gaston has worked as a coach or manager with the team for parts of 21 seasons, but simply serving as a teacher is something that has brought him much pride.

"The one thing I'll miss in this game is teaching," said the 66-year-old Gaston. "I still like to teach. I like to see guys be successful with what we're trying to teach them."

Gaston made it known before this season that it would be his last as manager of the Blue Jays, choosing to move into an advisory role with the club next year. Under those circumstances, Gaston viewed his role this year primarily as a teacher, helping usher Toronto into a new era in the franchise's history.

That sure is a lot of fluff.

He's a pretty good hitting coach and it seems that Adam Lind owes him a lot, but he's still a terrible in game manager.

Just name your terms, and enjoy Hawaii.
Is anybody here a marine biologist?

It's unfortunate that he came back, in a way, because his rep is somewhat tarnished by a lot of the bolshevik that's gone on in 2009 and 2010.

He should be remembered as the guy who navigated the team through 2 World Series wins, taking a bunch of lunatics and loose cannons and turning them into team players. He inherited a team with Dave Stieb, George Bell, Kelly Gruber, David Wells, Tony Fernandez, Al Leiter, Todd Stottlemyre who were all headcases for one reason or another. His mantra of sticking by veteran players worked well - Gruber and Joe Carter, to name two off the top of my head, went through massive slumps but ended up coming up big afterward.

They later acquired Jack Morris, David Cone and Rickey Henderson (at different times) - again, all loose canons in their own way.

Sticking by your veterans works when your team is loaded but hasn't worked as well with stiffs like Overbay, Encarnacion, Kevin Millar, and Wells.

Cito can't catch a break sometimes. This team was pegged by most to finish dead last in the division and they played above expectations the whole way through. You can say what you want about his managing style, but the fact that he has gotten this much out of these bums is good enough for me to applaud him no matter how he did it.

The rookies will get their time next season, and with spring training and a 162 game season ahead there will be plenty of time for them to learn.

Players win games, not managers for the most part. Besides helping guys like Lind and Bautista with their hitting Cito has done made very few moves of any kind that have visibly helped this team win. Meanwhile, his obviously boneheaded moves like batting MacDonald second or bouncing Snider from 9th to 1st and back have been abundant.
