"Manny Ramirez would like to play for the Blue Jays"

Just stumbled across this (on Twitter, of course)

Manny Ramirez would like to play for the Blue Jays under new manager John Farrell, the slugger told ESPN's Enrique Rojas (story in Spanish). Ramirez and Farrell crossed paths on the Red Sox, of course. Manny added that he had hernia surgery two weeks ago and was never 100% during the season. He feels like he has a lot of baseball left and can stay healthy as a designated hitter.

EDIT:
I'll try to update this first post when I can for easy access to info

Not the first time he has expressed his desire to be a Jay. He said it as a FA in 2008 and before that in Boston too. And he rakes at the Dome too. It's not like he'd be blocking anyone. We have to figure out the 1B/DH situation anyway so might as well sign him to DH for a 1 year deal while seeing if Lind works at 1B.

I remember Manny (or someone close to him) referencing Toronto dating back to 2000 when he was a free agent the first time (prior to signing with Boston). He obviously likes the idea of playing for the Jays.

My thoughts? Make it happen. In a down year he hit .298/.406/.460. Put him at DH on a one year contract, sit back, and enjoy the production.

Adding another elite hitter to this team might put them over the top.

I'll pass, we have no room for him and with the Farrell signing it seems like we're going to continue building with young players.

He would be a great DH, he loves the Dome.

I hope this doesn't turn into another Frank Thomas situation

Manny is a type A free agent so unless the Sox dont offer him arb he will cost a pick, cant see him being worth it to us. However if for some reason Chicago really doesn't want him on the team next year and dont want to risk him accepting his arb then a 1 year deal with a club option on another 2 years similar to Greggs option but more dollars might work well for both sides. Would help with the OBP problem the team had and he would slot nicely into the 5th spot in the order, if we can find a lead off guy with at 380+ OBP the offense would be much more balanced and potent.

For the right price and length, why not. It's Manny Freakin Ramirez, the elite bat of our generation.

thx for the link...

"Toronto has made a great acquisition. Farrell is a manager for whom I would like to play, and Toronto is a team I've liked since they had all those Dominican players in the 80's," Ramirez continued.

Make it happen!

darth_federer wrote:Jeff Blair was talking about this on Prime Time Sports. Apparently Manny always wanted to end his career in Toronto because he has hit a lot of homers in the Rogers center (27 homers in 97 games) and he wanted to play in a place where he could stat pad for the last couple years of his career.

Orlando Cabrera who is a good friend of his told Blair this and Blair told Riccardi about it, but the Jays could never come up with the money.

Its worth a shot if hes going to DH. Dont know if the Jays would pay 10 million though (I would imagine that it would take something like that to get him in Toronto.)

#1. There is room.
#2. If there isn't, we can make room. It's Manny freaking Ramirez in the Dome. Imagine the domination.

A guy with a career .400 OBP should be higher than 5. If Manny's on the team, make him the 3.

Ok after a quick check of Cotts there is no way the Sox will offer Manny arb, so im all for this. Something like 6.5 mil plus 2 mil bonus for PA and RBI, with a team option of 8 mil for years 2 and 3 or a 14.75 mil option for both years. Gives the team options and flexibility, gives Manny a chance to pad stats and if he plays well a chance to cash in at the end of his career.

Maybe 4th I don't see Manny slotting into the 3 hole as well as Jose.

if Manny is on board, I guess this means Lind to 1B?

Yes, they discussed Lind moving to 1B on Bobcats show. I doubt that Manny costs more than Overbay. It would be the perfect swap. Every group of youngsters needs a vet. Especially one who is on the same page as the Coach and who has some experience at winning.

Farrell was on PTS and he said that you would have to consider Manny because hes the best right handed bat of his generation. He said that he isnt all that worried about chemistry and his impact in the dressing room because people dont see how hard he works.

I can't wait to find out Schadenfreude's opinion on possibly getting Man Ram.
