Bautista unanimous choice as Jays' player of year

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Fri Nov 26, 2010 3:33 pm

It will come as no surprise that Jose Bautista was the unanimous selection as 2010 Blue Jays player of the year, as voted on by members of the Toronto chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

In addition, Bautista, who led the major leagues with 54 home runs, was named the team’s most improved player and was the popular winner of the John Cerutti Award.

John Buck and Vernon Wells finished second in the MVP ballot, while Wells and pitcher Brandan Morrow were tied for second in the most-improved category.

Ricky Romero won pitcher-of-the-year honours, ahead of Brett Cecil. No rookie of the year prize was awarded as the sample size of rookie contributions was so small.

The Cerutti Award, named in honour of the former Jays pitcher and broadcaster, is given annually to the Blue Jay who displays the goodwill, co-operation and character exemplified by the late pitcher.

I think the better question would have been: "Who was the Jays' second most valuable player this year?". I have a feeling that quite a few different names might have entered the mix.

Pitching-wise, lots of guys had good years. That award must have been fairly hotly contested even beyond Romero. Cecil had a great year. Morrow progressively got better and struck out tons of guys. One could argue that Gregg merited some attention (everyone expected him to faulter yet he never really did). Hell, Shawn Camp had a spectacular season out of the bullpen. I think you could make an argument that without his skill as an effective "long man", Cito might have had to ride a few of his starters even longer resulting in more big innings, etc.

Pretty crazy that after Halladay left that we'd be saying Jose Bautista was the Jays POY.

And it's Brandon Morrow.
