They re going for high end prospects who might end up busting. Its the right approach IMO. You need premier talent to win in the AL East. I remember AA said that they spent hours researching the draft and they found that most great players are drafted in high school.

Heh, we only took four players from four-year colleges in the first 20 rounds (and nearly 30 picks): Deck McGuire, Asher Wojzfdre3*owski, Sam Dyson and Dayton Marze, all pitchers.

Just looking at the top 20 rounds of each draft, from 2002-2008, Ricciardi drafted 25 high players total. That is 25 draftees over seven drafts (again just the first 20 rounds), which AA already topped in one draft.

I really don't care about HS/college as long as the talent is there. With Ricciardi, I never got the feeling that he drafted a potential star (other than maybe Snider) after the draft concluded. AA is going the opposite direction (all HS), so his picks will take much longer to develop and will have higher bust potential, but I like what I have seen so far.

Its hard to say as last years draft was stocked with HS arms collage bats were weak and collage arms were so-so. Really we should look at this after 3-4 drafts to get a better sense of what AA's draft philosophy is like, I would expect it to be tilted to HS talent but not that badly 65/35 ish

Agreed...I think that JP did a pretty decent job drafting, all things considered (Hill, Marcum, Lind, Janssen, Litsch, Purcey, Romero, Snider, Arencibia and Cecil in a five-year span is solid), but I think that AA's high risk/high reward drafting -- and trades -- is a better fit for what our organization has to do at this point.

I think we'll continue to see more of the same. I think that because we had so many early picks this year that they felt they could work in some high end college players, and perhaps we'll see a couple more selected next year with the abundance of picks again. Usually though, high cieling college players are gone pretty quick so i think we can expect to see AA go hard on the HS's each year as the norm. The highest likelihood of a college selection is probably in the early rounds for AA unless, including if someone slips due to, for example, signability issues.

Actually i'm kind of shocked about the Toronto HS's number one for both number drafted and signed. You've got to be kidding me? Is this true? How can we have more HS players drafted than the big US cities? Who could have ever guessed this. You'd expect that in Hockey, not MLB.

Edit: ohhhh...i think i misread that. He means the BJ's drafted the most HS's. That makes sense. I thought they were saying most of the HS's were from Toronto...lol.

Actually we might be first in that too. Dalton Pompey was a HS pick from Missisauga. I don't think anyone else from the GTA was picked.

I think it was a step in the right direction for a team that really hasn't produced a consistent star (they've gotten one big season out of certain guys but no longevity to their excellence) in a really long time.

That being said, as frustrating as it might have been to not have developed a true star in the past decade, there's something to be said for the number of starting caliber players this team developed during JPR's reign. He missed on a few guys, but he rarely missed as big as other GMs did.

Its not insignificant money that AA has had to spend to sign all these boys. Even though they are high schoolers, they are demanding top dollar to sign. AA has taken money from the big club to feed the farm system. JPR focused on College players an less high profile draftees so he didn't end up in situations where he couldn't sign his draft pick.
