So would he be an improvement on Kevin Gregg? How are closers best "rated"? Is there a way to find out how many 3-up, 3-down saves a closer had?

He's about as good as Gregg. Although probably a lot cheaper, won't cost a pick, and probably a one year deal. Nothing wrong with that at all. Could probably get something for him at the deadline, too.

Might be a slight improvement over Gregg. He's a good vet, for a one year deal or two at most won't be bad.

Yep. Like Gregg, Dotel has that idiotic "he can close!" mystique, and thus if he has a decent first half, he'll inexplicably have value at the deadline. And additionally, he has a solid shot at hitting Type B again with a good (3.50-4.00 ERA, 60+ IP) year.

wasn't Dotel a stud just a couple of years ago?

He's OK. I guess he's another guy that we can live with until we develop our own true closer through the system- like Farina or Stewart.

At least he's cheap.

If by a couple you mean 7, and by stud you mean pretty good, then yes.

2004 - 3.69 ERA, 36 SV/45 opp, 85.1 IP, 122K, 33 BB, 1.18 WHIP, 13 HR allowed

All about price, sub 3m for a year and it's the next Gregg type signing, if he wants more than that you move on to your next target. I agree with Schad that you can pay a bit of a premium for the mystique, not because it has value for your club, but because it does add some value for other clubs later on in potential moves.

Relievers are just so wildly inconsistent for the most part, and AA had just about a perfect reclamation (sp?) project offseason (Gregg, Buck, AGone) last year that I'm hoping he can repeat once or twice more with a vet reliever or two this year, but at the same price ranges as last year. Hard to keep up that kind of track record I know, but if you can keep flipping a couple mil a year into a decent reliever and then into a comp pick, that's maximizing your roster spots and salary about as well as you can IMO.

I do not like Dotel, but am pleased with 1 year.

Signing guys to flip them is such a cynical operation, but it's the right way to go. I'm not a fan of Don't Ask Dotel (scorned fantasy owner here) but he misses bats and that counts for a lot in the majors.

They are saying the contract is worth about what he was paid last year. Does this suggest he should have accepted arbitration with his old club? Usually salaries go up in arbitration, not down unless your numbers really fall off the table. This may also mean that if the jays offer him arbitration next year in hopes of snagging a draft pick...he may have learned a lesson here and accept arbitration with the jays next year. Getting ahead of ourselves a bit here, but just trying to get a glimpse of the big picture.

I think its no risk in this potential signing. He's cheaper then Gregg like others said and I think he's better as well.

The Blue Jays agreed to sign Octavio Dotel to a one-year, $3.5MM deal that includes a club option for 2012, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com (Twitter links). Dotel will undergo his physical in Florida in the New Year, according to Rojas.

As expected. Glad to have him on board. Hopefully he'll do better then Gregg was for us last season.

Probably not much better. Dotel is the Dominican version of Gregg, so prepare for plenty of three-walk saves and a sandwich pick at the end of the year.

Well you never know. I've always liked Dotel. Plus he's cheaper then Gregg.
