Blue Jays Claim Wil Ledezma

Post#1 » by CapeCrusader » Wed Jan 5, 2011 8:28 pm

The Blue Jays claimed Wil Ledezma on waivers from the Pirates, according to a Toronto press release. The Pirates agreed to terms with the left-hander on a one-year split contract earlier in the offseason and designated him for assignment late last month. Ledezma will earn $700K in the majors and $300K in the minors.

Ledezma who turns 30 this month, posted a 6.86 ERA with 10.1 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 in 19 2/3 innings for the Pirates last year. He'll likely compete with left-handers Jesse Carlson, Rommie Lewis and David Purcey for bullpen spots this spring.

Anybody know anything about him?

ledezma is another left handed arm but don't expect him to be pegged higher than carlson or purcey, even lewis. he has had 2 effective seasons in the bigs, 3 if you want to be generous. another move that will cost us nothing if it pans out somewhat.

1.47 career K/BB. And he's a reliever. Don't expect much, he'll probably be teammates with Corey Patterson all year.

His career K/BB is 1.47 yet last year he posted a 3.7 K/BB last year, granted its a small sample size based on innings worked. I'm curious to see how he pans out.

It seems like we seem to be stock piling arms who post high K/9 rates.

6.4 career K/9. I don't think there's much reason to be optimistic for him. 19 innings is not much to go by. He had a good year in AA in 2004 I think which kinda raised expectations (I seem to remember him being talked about as a decent prospect back then) but he's flopped big time since then. I love the idea of this scrap heap bullpen with guys like Villanueva, Cordero, and Dotel. I just don't think Ledezma has nearly the upside those other guys have. But you never know I guess... maybe the scouting department sees something.

nothing ventured, nothing gained. Hopefully he is pushed by guys in AAA.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.

The Toronto Blue Jays outrighted left-handed reliever Wilfredo Ledezma to triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

He will be a non-roster invitee to spring training, the team said in a release.

Ledezma, 29, was claimed on waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates last Wednesday. He was 0-3 last season with a 6.86 earned-run average in 27 appearances.

Ledezma, a native of Guarico, Venezuela, is 15-25 with a 5.26 ERA in 187 career games with Pittsburgh, Detroit, Atlanta, San Diego, Arizona and Washington.
