Your All-Time Jays Roster...

Post#1 » by Evermore » Mon Feb 7, 2011 5:42 pm

Make the best lineup you can...using players who have played for the Jays

C - Lance Parrish
1B - Frank Thomas
2B - Roberto Alomar
SS - Tony Fernandez
3B - Scott Rolen
LF - Rickey Henderson
CF - Paul Molitor
RF - Dave Winfield
DH - Carlos Delgado

Batting order:

Henderson
Alomar
Molitor
Thomas
Delgado
Winfield
Rolen
Parrish
Fernandez

Rotation:

SP - Roger Clemens
SP - Roy Halladay
SP - Dave Stewart
SP - David Cone
SP - Jack Morris

Bullpen:

RP - Duane Ward
RP - Tom Henke
RP - Randy Myers
RP - BJ Ryan
RP - Dave Righetti

Good luck narrowing it down to 5 starters...

I first had Frank Viola as my 5th starter...then Stieb...before settling on Morris (David Wells, Jimmy Key and Juan Guzman were also in the running -- and just now did I remember Chris Carpenter)

I also considered Benito Santiago at C...but Parrish was an offensive monster in the 80's

And Otis Nixon was almost my CF...then White...until I remembered Molitor spent time in the OF (mostly as a CF)

It broke my heart to leave off Gruber...who remains my all-time favorite Blue Jay

And I suppose Dave Parker and Jose Canseco deserve an honourable mention...as well as Shawn Green, Joe Carter, Cecil Fielder and Fred McGriff

Did I miss Manny Lee's election to the HOF? :-?

(I think you forgot Alomar)

Edit - you did remember Roberto in your batting order....

Chris Carpenter should probably be in the rotation too, I'm just not sure who gets bumped.

Based on your criteria, it would be tough to improve on what you did. I'd prefer to do this based on their Blue Jay careers only instead of their MLB careers.

The Jays' best hitter for his only real season on the team.

Basing it on how they played WITH the Blue Jays, my lineup would be as follows:

C Fletcher (2000 20 HR 58RBI 0.320 AVG)
1B - Delgaldo (2000: 41HR 131RBI 0.344 AVG)
2B: Alomar (1993: 17HR 93RBI 0.326 AVG 55SB)
SS: Fernandez (1987: 0.322 AVG, Gold Glover)
3B: Gruber (1990: 31HR 118RBI 0.274 AVG)
LF:George Bell (47HR 134 RBI MVP)
RF:Joe Carter (1993 33HR 121RBI)
CF: Wells (2003: 33HR 117RBIs 0.317 AVG)
DH: Paul Molitor (1993: 22HR 111RBI 0.332AVG

SP Clemens (1997 21-7 2.05 ERA)
SP Halladay 2008 (20-11 2.78ERA)
SP Stieb (1990 18-6 2.93ERA)
SP Jimmy Key (1987 17-8 2.76ERA)

RP Eichorn (1986, 69 Games, 1.72 ERA 157 Innings)
RP Timlin (1991 11-6, 63 Games)
SET UP Ward (1992 1.93 ERA 79 Appearances)
CLOSER Henke (1992 34 Saves, 2.26ERA)

Lineup:
Fernandez
Alomar
Molitor
Delgado
Bell
Carter
Gruber
Wells
Fletcher

Toughest Selections:
Catcher. We really haven't anyone who was a standout at the position over the years.
Leaving Olerud & Winfield off the team.

BTW, Has there been a more dominating Setup/Closer Tandem than Ward & Henke in 1992?

I was just thinking that...

And it could be argued that both Bautista and Shaun Green had better seasons with Toronto in RF than Carter...

Another argument could be made that Rivera/Wetteland were a better bullpen duo than Ward/Henke

Not much argument there at all actually.

Carter's top OPS in Toronto was .842. Green's .972 and Bautista's .995 dwarf that number.

It also seems like you are being pretty picky. This thread is good and full of good conversation revolving around what you made the thread about.

I know. I didn't include Hentgen, because I prefered Stieb and Key. These are two guys that I remember most fondly from my early days as a fan of the jays.

In terms of Carter, I couldn't leave him off the team. Best memory from the jays was his world series winning home run.

I started a thread about apple pie...and now the good conversation is revolving around cheesecake

Obviously, not quite what I had in mind...

But, as one poster said, there may not be much to improve upon from my OP lineup...

It's better to have a roster of how they played WITH the jays, rather than their overall career outside.

More interesting.

Man, I know he didn't touch the other catchers, but Pat Border was the man. Clutch hit after clutch hit with some fantastic defense.

Actually, you made a rather open-ended statement. You could have been plenty clearer.
