So...anyone still have that opening day optimism?

LOL!! It's the same damn story with the Jays every single year. And every year, we fail. It reminds me of that old MJ commercial: "I have failed over and over and over again....and that is why I succeed." Except for the Jays, they would get rid of the last part!

I know it's just 10 games, but this team has shown an incredibile ability to be 'anti-clutch' in every possible manner. How many 1 run losses do we have already? I am proud to admit I didn't get suckered in this time. I knew this team was going to finish with 80 wins, and at this point they will be lucky to get to that number.

How about the rest of you....anyone still feeling 'optimistic' about this summer?

I refuse to get excited about the Jays until MLB expands the playoff format and allows more teams in.

so.. Don't Hate the Playa, Hate the Game?

It's what you do with what you're given that separates the winners from the whiners.

Well I think any of us that really fallow the Jays new that we weren't going to compete this year so not really a surprise, I'm actually pretty ok with it so far Romero looks great and is looking like a legit #2 on a playoff team Drabek has looked very good, and Lind even though the numbers don't show it yet has looked better at the plate (he still needs to take more pitches). Where right on track to finish with around 75-80 wins, exactly where most of use predicated.

It's still the first few weeks of a long season so no need to write them off at this point. Maybe our expectations were high at the start, but look up and down the standings and you will see a lot of other good teams stumbling out of the blocks.

I never thought we were going to make it this year, but it's still early to count them out completely.

Problem is, if it looks like you aren't going to make it there's no reason to get excited at all about the games. If baseball had expanded playoffs we could have seen a great playoff rivalry with the Yankees or Red Sox these past few seasons where the Jays were a good team but simply not great enough. Maybe then you would see more than 19000 show up for a game.

Well said.

The opening series was fun, but I don't think anyone here was talking playoffs.

The problem with this is that for as long as I can remember, the Jays management has been saying: "Next year is when we will really compete...this year we just want to develop." How long are we just going to accept this mediocrity in this city? Haven't we been rebuidling for 20 years now?

If Tampa, Milwaukee, Detroit and all these other 'small market' teams can make the playoffs, why don't we ever even sniff them? It's like management refuses to place any high expectations...which is precisely why the Jays never achieve anything.

In baseball the pennant race is the equivalent of a 1st round playoff series in basketball or hockey. I hoped to be in a pennant race. So called meaningful games in early September.

And I'm still very enthusiastic. I always say, if you stay in games long enough, you'll win your share. So far okay. Our problem will be when injuries hit that batting lineup, though.

So, about 3 years?

Stupid thread, with an uninformed OP.

This team is good, but they don't have the pieces to contend in the toughest division in baseball and didn't even pretend to hide the fact that it was a development year. Nothing has changed since Opening Day.

Soooo....we won 86 games last year in the same freakin division...yet its asking too much to win a few more and make a playoff push?

Wow...Toronto really is a city of losers I guess.

Lol...try the last 10 years, and maybe even further than that. Gord Ash, JP Riccardi, and now AA....they do the same song and dance every single year.

Can a hardcore Blue Jay fan tell me the last time the team came out from Day 1 and said: "We expect to compete and make the playoffs."????

I'm pretty sure the last time would have been 2000 when we had David Wells....and that team was actually decent (we were first as late as June).

Everyone here knew what this team was and what this season was before the season has started. What's changed in 11 games?

I guess that's my point. Management is always lowering expectations....and when you do that, you are setting up your players to underachieve. Why not dream big? Why not come and say that we want the playoffs and we're going to do our best to get there.

Teams (and people in general) always live up to what is expected of them.

I agree. But they didn't and everyone here knew that was the plan. So what's the point of this thread? Nothing should have changed for the fans over these 11 games.

The Jays made no attempt to improve short-term in the off-season (losing Wells, Marcum, and Buck, trading Napoli for Francisco, etc). I attended Opening Day, and it was a blast, but the roster had no business being a playoff team then, and nothing has changed in 11 games. You can blame AA for not making any type of short-term moves to help the team (bringing back EE and having a revolving bullpen turnover was basically it), but he clearly has a plan that he wants to stick to. We have seen what it takes to beat Boston and New York, and that is building a team of impact talent at nearly every position. The Jays are close, but still pieces away, and those pieces will have to come in the form of prospects (Lawrie, Thames, Gose, etc), unless Rogers shocks me and agrees to pay for Albert Pujols.
