who are some players that might slip due to signability issues? Would the Jays open their pockets to take on these higher priced prospects?

Really dunno at the moment. I would imagine that Bubba Starling will be a very tough sign, given his football commitment. Ditto Archie Bradley. Beyond that, we'll probably have to wait a couple weeks for draft coverage to kick into high gear...or for Met to put in an appearance.

I'd like to see us to take Gretzky in the 3rd or 4th round.

With the recently renewed interest in the Jays, having the extra picks, as well as a greater understanding of what types of players AA likes - this projects to be a well covered draft.
We were mostly surprised by the first 4 selections or so in june 2010. It will be interesting to see if we (the non front office public) are better able to anticipate the Jays selections this year.
I'm very much looking forward to the contributions of knowledgeable posters like Met-a-4 and others.

only if he really has the talent to deserve that pick, not because he's Wayne's kid or because he's Canadian. I've read a couple of scouting reports on him and they say that he's way too raw and it would be good for him to go to college. The room for failure isn't that big either, he's a first basemen who's not very athletic, so he'll have to mash.

http://mlbdraftguide.com/1/2011/03/27/z ... t-profile/Think thats pretty realistic Norris is ratted closer to 14-18 but I can see him falling to us, Anderson is ranked around 21-30 in most lists so I can definitely see him there at 35. I Really like Kolten Wong he fits a position of weakness in our system and hes a great athlete for his size, also has some power from the LH side of the plate. I know very little about prospects father down the list then 100 ish so ill leave any picks father down to people with more knowledge.

Matt Garrioch (the guy that took over for Seiler) Mid-Season Top 150:

Haven't really looked over anything in-depth yet, but I like OF Derek Fisher early.

BTW; note 2010 22nd round Toronto pick Aaron Westlake at #54 on Garrioch's list. He's having a very strong year at Vanderbilt and looks like one of the better college bats in the class.

Yeah, I'd like to see us go after hitting with our early picks, unless there's a knocks-our-socks-off pitcher who slides. That said, there's something about Fisher's swing in
this video (go to the 2:21 mark for in-game) that I'm not in love with. He cocks his hands back a bit late and doesn't really engage his lower half, which results in a little bit of a hitch and loopy swing. All very much correctable, though.

It looks like another very pitcher-heavy draft at the top so I wouldn't be surprised at all if we go pitching with a few of our very early picks.

Kris Bryant also has 7 homeruns in 30 something games at San Diego, Keith Law said he could be a top 10 pick in 2012, i think we're gonna be regretting not trying harder to get him signed.

Does kinda look that way...I'm just hoping that one of the good-looking bats makes its way down to us.
Thoughts on a guy like Levi Michael? Versatile defensively, switch-hitter, good runner, had a monstrous soph season before seeing his power tail fall off in a big way as a junior. Normally I'd think that it might be a blip, but with the NCAA switching to the BBCOR bats that supposedly behave more like wood, that worries me.

Yeah he's their best hitter; leads the team in batting average as well.
Nick Vander Tuig is having a very strong season out of the bullpen for UCLA. Cotto is terrible so far at USC (has like 3 hits in 30-something at bats). Logan Ehlers has only pitched like ~7 innings from what I remember so too early to tell there. Chris Marlowe has 57 strikeouts in 34.1 innings for Oklahoma State in relief; although walking a ton too (showing typical power reliever tendencies).

Yeah, he's killing it (all the more impressive because the stats suggest that USD isn't a hitter's environment), though some of the same questions remain...he's striking out at a high rate for a college kid, even a frosh.

Not a huge Levi fan myself don't see him do anything really well other than play all over the field and switch hit. What are peoples thoughts on Henry Owens 6'7" HS lefty if Norris is off the board?

HS = no.
According to moneyball drafting HS players is a joke percentage wise. College players pan out way more often.

While I agree with you that collage picks pan out more often I don't think you can ignore half of the eligible players. You need a solid mix of collage and prep players to build a successful team look at the primer players in the league at least half of them are drafted out of HS. If you are a team like the A's that has limited funds then perhaps that is the strategy you need to employ but you will be missing a lot of talent. With our large draft budget we can afford not to be short sighted and go for the players that look like they can be all stars regardless of where they are coming from. In something that is as big a crap shoot as the MLB draft you can't afford to limit yourself because of fear of failure.
