Bautista's value

I am not condoning or suggesting that we trade Bautista, just curious as to what his value would be in an open market.

Something worth addressing especially if the struggles of Lind, Hill and Snider and something to be concerned about. If these guys really aren't going to put up the numbers that they are projected to, without Rogers pony'ing up this off-season and going bonkers; it might be a few seasons until we are able to compete for a playoff spot even with the expanded contention next season.

What could we fetch for him if he continues to stay hot and on a great contract? Is he worth more to the franchise selling seats?

Wouldn't happen simply due to the negative press, but interesting discussion nonetheless considering that he could be considered the best power hitter in the game at this point.

AA trades bombtista and he can forget about competing in the next 5 years. Bautista is the cornerstone
of this lineup. Hopefully AA will have enough balls to signup or trade for a big bat in the offseason.

But If AA was having a firesale, He should probably ask for 3 best prospects of an organization (bottom 10 excepted.)

i wonder what the asking price of Bautista was during last year's trading deadline. i'm sure every team was hesitant, as they weren't sure if he was going to continue his pace.

I would say Justin Upton + 2 A level prospects (like top tier, not single A!)

I think this offseason coming up he'd get 20m a year if he continues to hit like this

You build around elite talent, don't trade it. Especially not for prospects and especially when the elite talent is under control on a reasonable deal.

He'd be worth what the Rangers got for Mark Texiera and then some more.

It's going to be pretty high, but Randle is right - you don't even contemplate such a trade. Since Jose has just signed his contract, he isn't going to demand a trade. If we were to trade him without a trade demand, it would say to every fan and every potential free agent that this team's owner only pays lip service to winning, that we are little more committed to the concept than, say, the Pittsburgh Pirates or Jeffrey Loria. Frankly, dealing him for a prospect-laden package would empty out the stands of casual fans - and some hardcores - and cause a lot of people to tune out the Jays on TV.

So you don't trade him. You accept he's a phenomenon and figure out how to use that as a model for your young players to emulate, and to attract quality free agents to Toronto. You open your wallet, either by seeking out free agents, or via trade, upgrades in the form of decent players being let go by their teams in salary dumps (so long as the contracts don't have more than a year or two left). In other words, look to take some steps forward while awaiting for the best of our prospects to work their way up to the majors.

Purely in hypothetical, I'd have to say this is around what he would fetch. Considering his friendly contract and the fact that he's almost at around 900/1000 PA's at this elite rate (meaning this should be his new standard).

But the Jays should not trade him, not under any normal circumstances.

Trading Bautista isn't even an option. It might be in a few years if AA's plan doesn't work out, but it would have to take a king's ransom to move him now and even then it would be foolish. He is proving so far that 2010 was not a fluke, and that is elite level performance. My biggest fear is wasting his good years like we have done with so many other great players in the past 18 years. The Jays better be going for it next season. They have no excuse not to with the expanded playoffs coming in.

Maybe we could get that Napoli guy. His OPS is about the same.

It's great that we're talking about Jose's "reasonable" or "friendly" deal. I never doubted that it was good risk, but a few on this board did. The other thing with Jose is that the franchise seems to be going through a Latino player renaissance, and he's the perfect leader for the new Jays. But I agree, it's fun to consider what his value would be.

Especially with Bosh gone, Jose's the only elite talent left in the city. (Sorry, couldn't resist).

Also, despite the recent troubles of the starters, Lind, etc. I don't think we're that far away. We've got three solid young starters in Morrow, Romero and Drabek, the probability that at least ONE of the others in the system can get it together, starting with Cecil, and the hope of a free agent stud in the next year or so. If Lind and EE don't pan out, it's not that difficult to get decent first baseman/DHers. I therefore reject the premise that as a rebuilding team we would even consider cashing in Bautista for prospects. We just need another +.850 OPS hitter or two hitting behind him.

And the Jays trading Napoli for Frank Francisco is at a lower-case lol level right now. Damn.

Still, can't complain about the Wells trade.

Where would Napoli have played anyway? We needed to develop JPA, that was known. Would Napoli accepted a DH role?

Why not? And if anything, Napoli's track record shows that he's at least worth more than a middling reliever like Frank Francisco.
