We heard alot of the best trades in Jays history..... example: Vernon Wells deal, or Roberto Alomar deal etc....

but which have bean the worst trades in the Jays history?

the trades that have haunted the Jays in a big way... have the Jays been made fools.... and when?

examples: Jays sent young 2B Jeff Kent and OF Ryan Thompson to the New York Mets for David Cone

Kent went on to be a MVP, but decent trade cause Cone was a glue guy in Toronto

but then, the Jays do this deal:

Sent DAVID CONE to the New York Yankees for JASON JARVIS, MIKE GORDON & MARTY JANZEN

Those trades aren't actually in sequence. We did trade Kent for Cone in 1992, but as he ended up pitching six solid innings in the clinching game of the World Series, it's hard to hate the move. He then left after the season, though, bound in free agency for Kansas City.

The second trade is a later occurrence; we traded three prospects to KC in early 1995 for Cone (none of whom really accomplished anything...Chris Stynes was the only one to even make the majors), and a couple months later when it became apparent that we weren't the same team post-strike, we shipped him to New York for the aforementioned package. A bad deal certainly, but basically garbage in and garbage out; the net result was that we swapped three bad prospects for three bad prospects.


The worst trade in Jays history remains Robert Person for John Olerud. It's basically impossible to conceive of a worse trade, though Michael Young and Darwin Cubillan for Estoban Loaiza tried.

JAYS trade ace, David Wells and Matt DeWitt for Mike Sirotka of the white sox...... who never played a game for Toronto and was injured when the trade happened anyway

Jays protested but the MLB sided with the White Sox.... Jays were compensated. However all they got was a garbage package of Kevin Beirne, Brian Simmons, and minor leaguer Mike Williams, and the mistake ultimately cost Ash his job.

Easily John Olerud (and $6M!) to the Mets for Robert Person. Nothing comes close to being that bad. Although Ash giving the Yankees Cone and Clemens, and being partially responsible for their late-90's Dynasty wasn't particular fun as a Jays fan.

The Kent/Cone trade was fine. The Jays had never won a World Series to that point and Cone pushed them over the top (2.55 ERA in 53 regular season innings, followed by 3.26 ERA in 22.1 innings in four playoff starts). The Jays were really a three deep rotation at that point with Morris, Key, and Guzman. Cone was a much needed arm down the stretch.

I was going to say Shawn Green for Raul Mondesi and Borbon

Some trades I liked:

Plesac for Frascatore and Batista. Frascatore went perfect and Batista was a 40+HR hitter.
And then David Segui for Brad Fullmer.

Considering everything, we've been pretty lucky.

It's easily Olerud for Person. Of course, Young for Loaiza was awful too but we had something of a surplus up the middle and badly needed a starter. Trading away a minor league prospect isn't nearly as bad as trading away an Olerud because Cito didn't think he hit enough HRs. Cito even talked some nonsense about him wilting under the pressure in NY. **** you very much, Cito.

While it wasn't a great trade, there was nothing especially bad about the Green deal. Mondesi put up 2.6 and 1.8 WAR for us over two years, while Green put up 3.6 in the one season we could have kept him. In retrospect, you would have preferred to trade him for prospects, but we were trying to make the playoffs then, and only had a limited number of trade partners with Green's desire to be on the west coast.

Collins and Griffin for Caudill was a definite bust.

Stupid Ash we could have gotten Mark Bueherle instead of Sirotka. I know its hind sight but imagine bueherle pitch for blue jays

Another FYI - This deal was supposed to go down in Summer of 2000. Pedro Astacio for Roy Halladay. Thank god we never did that deal.

wow, i totally remember that rumor.. talk about deals that didn't go down!! speaking of which, what about that Rios for Lincecum? haha.

I have heard a few variations of that trade.

1. Astacio and Jimenez for Halladay, Wells, and Carpenter
2. Astacio for Halladay and Wells
3. Astacio for Carpenter and Wells
4. Astacio for Carpenter and Halladay

Don't know which is true or false, but I would rather not think about it either way. Ash ended up going with Michael Young for Esteban Loaiza instead. Under the circumstances, losing out on Young was a much better alternative.

Didn't realize Astacio was so coveted by the organization back then. I wonder if it had to do with the fact that his name rhymed with 'mustachio'

Easily the Sirotka trade. How did they not even bother to check his health situation?

January 25, 2011 Acquired RHP Frank Francisco and cash considerations from Texas for C Mike Napoli.


I'm hoping they needed the cash for something important. Francisco been good, but Napoli would make a decent DH.

This deal only looks that bad because we have EE as Napoli's replacement at DH...... otherwise Napoli is nothing special....... it was not a great deal but it shouldnt even be in this discussion. It was a deal u can forget and move one very quickly

Francisco was a key part of the TEXAS bullpen and likey JAYS closer, so i can see what AA was thinking there....... but ur right, it dosent look that amazing in hind sight
