Google translate spit this out:

On the other hand, it was learned that the young Wilmer Becerra, Marck Malave and Jesus Gonzalez made a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs for a total of six figures, like Joseph Ruiz, who made $ 1.2 million dollars with San Diego Padres.

Rangers land Ronald Guzman (who the Jays were in contention for) for $3+ million. They have also reportedly gotten Nomar Mazara for $5 million. Ridiculous.

More proof that we're all getting old: the Rangers signed a kid by the name of Nomar Mazara today (for $5m). Nomar is not actually a Spanish name; Nomar Garciaparra's father Ramon just reversed the spelling of his own name. So now, presumably, kids who were named after a guy that I remember as a rookie are getting signed. Dammit.

Reminded me of a classic A-Rod quote from a long-ago all-star game:

“I’m the youngest, Derek’s the richest and Garciaparra’s the best.”
Is anybody here a marine biologist?

Jays have 'supposedly' landed SS/OF Wilmer Becerra, OF Jesus Gonzalez, RHP Manuel Cordoba, and SS Arturo Michelana. All are from Venezuela.

They have also made an "offer" to Mexican RHP Roberto Osuna.

Michelena was signed for only $220k according to MLBTR. That's pretty low.

Rumor is apparently $1.2 or $1.4 mill for Gonzalez and $1.3 mill for Becerra.

Seems kind of overpriced... I can go to the grocery store and get a Michelena for a couple bucks :)

Good question. This year's class is supposed to be better; and particularly deeper I believe....but even then you're hard pressed to really compare the kids. BA and everyone else seems to think that Guzman is better than Mazara...yet Guzman got $3.5 mill and Mazara got ~$5 mill from the Rangers.

Rumored to have gotten SS Dawel Lugo for ~$1.3 mill as well:

Darwel Lugo acordaría este domingo con los Azulejos por 1.3 millones.

=
Lugo Darwel remember this Sunday with the Blue Jays by 1.3million.

I'm getting that from another poster on another board...he's getting it from articles/forums.

Important to note that we have still yet to make an "official" signing.

the guy on the far left is former Blue Jays Alex Gonzalez..... probably one of the better SS in the league at the time, but hugely overshadowed by the other big name SS at the time. It was the era of the shortstops.

Jays never got another solid everyday SS ever since Gonzalez was traded...... until Escobar now

Alex Gonzalez was never one of the better all-around shortstops in the league, as he was a pretty terrible hitter most of the time. He had a couple seasons which qualified as above-average thanks to his glove, but he never came close to living up to the expectations that people placed on him when he was a minor leaguer.

My favourite Alex Gonzalez fact: take a look at his similarity scores by age. At practically every point, the most comparable player to Alex Gonzalez is...Alex Gonzalez.

Dominican SS Dawel Lugo is our first official (BA confirmed) signing:

Blue Jays Sign Dawel Lugo For $1.3 Million

Posted Jul. 4, 2011 11:31 am by Ben Badler
Filed under: International, News

The Blue Jays have signed Dominican shortstop Dawel Lugo for $1.3 million.

Lugo, a righthanded hitter from Bani, was one of the top 16-year-old hitters available from the Dominican Prospect League. At 6 feet, 170 pounds, many scouts believe Lugo will end up at third base. Lugo so far has the top confirmed bonus for a Latin American infielder since the international signing period opened on July 2.
