Hall of Fame second baseman Roberto Alomar will be given the Toronto Blue Jays highest honour on July 31, 2011 when his uniform number will be retired in a pregame ceremony at Rogers Centre. Alomar’s number 12 will be the first number retired by the Blue Jays in their 35 year history.

"Roberto is a very special part of the Blue Jays organization and arguably the greatest 2nd baseman of all-time," said Paul Beeston. “His number deserves to be retired so that his contributions and excellence can stand as a model for all those...wearing a Jays uniform.”
Other Jays who have worn #12 in Toronto: Tilson Brito, Rich Butler, Encarnacion, Willie Greene, Luis Lopez, Tony Phillips, Ernie Whitt, Kenny Williams.

Hello fellow Blue Jays fans, this is my first time posting in the Blue Jays forum. This is awesome to hear! Robbie was always my favourite Jay/player growing up. Hmm, I'm suddenly in the mood for some McCain fruit punch...

However, if it's obvious, then we shouldn't wait till their elected.

It seemed likely that this was gonna happen when Encarnacion randomly switched to #10 after Wells was traded.

I guess they should go ahead and retire #32, then.

Oh man... Thank you for this!
Does anyone else remember the Jr Jay comic books that they gave out during Jr Jays Saturdays? I want to find out how terrible (and hilariously) they've aged since then.

I hope they retire Carlos and Steib's numbers too. Best power hitter (for more than 1.5 seasons), and the best pitcher in team history.

Carter is good enough for the Level of Excellence, but not retired. Same goes with Stieb. I'd say it's either Delgado or Halladay who's number would be retired next.

Yeah, but isn't a big part of it not just going to the HoF, but going as a Jay? Nobody will know for sure about that until Cooperstown announces it.

It was the best pitcher he ever faced...
