Were Jays talking Bautista for Votto Trade?

A reader tipped me a while back that he has a friend in baseball who told him the Reds were talking to the Blue Jays about a trade Jose Bautista-for-Joey Votto trade. The Reds would have had to kick in a prospect as well.

I get tips like that from time to time. I usually dismiss them. But the fact that the Blue Jays sent a scout to Dayton to specifically watch Daniel Corcino, probably the Reds best pitching prospect, tells me they were talking trade with the Reds.

It's probably nothing but would you guys consider a trade like this? If something like this even happened it would create a log jam at 1st base with Lind as well.

PR Nightmare, and the Jays scouting a team's best prospect doesn't really mean much in the grand scheme of things.

Was this before or after the Rasmus trade ?

If it was before, they could have been discussing Patterson for Votto/Corcino

The Reds could always use some more pitching, so maybe it was Mills for Votto/Corcino

Wow. Talk about a blockbuster.

Votto + Bruce + Corcino
for
Bautista + Lind

Just Imagine.

Bautista is amazing, likely the best power hitter in the game rite now..... but Votto has the kind of game you can build around... like a Franchise player vibe.

I think if you ask most MLB execs, Joey Votto is considered the more valuable player..... no way REDS also throw in their top prospect in this deal

Id hate to see Bautista go... but if this was true, obviousy AA offered and Reds laughed

Explain, because none of that makes sense to me.

it doesn't make sense because it is a load of ****.

Bautista is the best player in all of baseball right now.

And being that he plays a solid RF, he gives you better defensive value.

Not to mention the leadership role he has taken on this team, which will only grow in importance with all the young players on this team.

How is Votto considered the more valuable player? Admittedly, he's three years younger, but he plays a position that is stacked with power players. Literally, good hitting 1B are a dime a dozen. Well, okay maybe not.

But Bautista is currently the better player overall even when not factoring position into the equation, and then you add that Bautista can play 3B and he's by far killing it in value over Votto.

To me, to make this trade the Reds would have to throw in a few pieces. And not only that, but we already have Lind at 1B who isn't the greatest but he's no throw-away piece.

Then finally factor in the controllable years at reasonable salaries. Votto is slated to make $17MM next year and then becomes an FA. Bautista is making much less than that and for longer number of years. In hindsight, Bautista's contract has been a stroke of genius by AA, and just that alone makes a straight up trade inequitable.

Bautista has the most value in the entire major leagues.

They'd have to add.

Wouldn't be opposed to Votto being the centrepiece coming back, but the Reds would have to offer a lot more to make this make sense for the Jays. Bautista has more value defensively, offensively, and from a contract standpoint.

There is no way in hell this rumor had any substance, IMO.

Complete nonsense. Bautista is the better and more valuable player, of course the Reds would have to add. 28 or 29 other teams would have to add on to their best player in a package for Bautista.

Pretty ridiculous to think that the other team would "obviously laugh" at such an inquiry by AA. Bautista's a more valuable player at a more valuable position signed to a more valuable deal (edit: oops, all that was already covered), and the Reds would be adding a player in A ball. Nothing groundbreaking.

Bautista is 30...Votto 27

4 and a half more seasons of Bautista vs 8 or 9 seasons of a Toronto born MVP...

Honestly, I might be tempted by a straight up deal

You'd need more than just Votto in a deal to get the Jays to consider giving up Bautista.
