John Lott confirms it as well Alvarez will start Friday via his twitter : https://twitter.com/#!/LottOnBaseball

This is equally as exciting as Rasmus and Lawrie joining the team for me.

Schad et al..

What makes the Jays think that Henderson Alverez is ready for the Bigs? Has he been that good in NH?

His fastball sits at 93-97, he's been clocked at 101, he's got a plus change up, he's got what's described as a fringy curve, on nights when its working - he's big league ready. He's got good control, doesn't walk people, gets ground balls, over his last 45 IP he's got 39 strikeouts so he's been missing more bats and he has to be added to the 40 man after this season anyways. So if they want to see him against teams before the talent pool gets watered down in September, now's as a good time as any.

I think they want a quick look so they can tell him what to improve on next year in the minors.

I'm pretty stunned that it is Alvarez before Carreno, especially when you consider the struggles Alvarez was having just a year ago in the FSL

But as long as it's because they think he's truly ready and not just the best option available, then I am really pumped about this... easily as excited as I was about Lawrie

Perhaps they are targetting Carreno primarily as a bullpen option, which would be a bit of a disappointment to be honest

I wonder what the follow up move's are ? Hutch is having his way again tonight and has been on the same kind of roll that he was on when he was promoted from Lansing

If not Hutch, then Molina maybe ?

And then you'd figure Lawrence would go back to Dunedin, does that maybe pave the way for Nicolino to Lansing?

edit... Forgot that McGowan is going to NH... So no further related moves would probably be made

Yeah, Carreno would have been a better choice, IMO. He is older and has had much better success at missing bats at the minor league level than Alvarez has. Pitchers with command problems should not be reduced to one inning roles unless absolutely necessary because that just emphasizes the walk rates. Stretch them out over 6 or 7 innings and the walks become much less of an issue as long as the other ratios remain somewhat effective. Carreno, with a BB/9 of 4.6, 16 wild pitches, and 11 HBP does not seem like a one inning guy at this point, though maybe that changes in the future.

Regardless, I'm excited to see what Alvarez can do. Seems like the Jays are trying to avoid Vegas completely for their starters, which is a good thing.

Follow up move is dustin mcgowan being promoted to AA. (Hutch and molina will probably play out the year in Dunedin). Carreno has severe walk issues. Should AA bring him up as, it should be as a reliever (could be the solution at closer).
On Henderson Alvarez, hopefully his breaking ball is coming along nicely. This team desperately needs another top of the rotation starter.

Forgot about the McGowan move

Carreno has never had control issues until this season... No way you can pigeon-hole the guy as a reliever because of his increased walk rate this year

I think Carreno will end up in the pen if he stays here, due to the logjam of starting options coming up through the minors.

He probably deserves a shot to start, but that is what I think will happen. Drabek is still in the fold and McGowan is sort of coming on as a wild card. Then you have Jenkins/McGuire too.

Anyways, Hutchison with some more domination tonight.

6.0IP 1H 0ER 0BB 5SO 6:3GO:FO

God damn.

I agree that Carreno may very well end up in the pen long term if he remains with the team

However he would certainly have more value if he could be effective as a mid-rotation, or even back of rotation, guy, so as long as there's an opportunity I would hope we give him a shot

In other words, this team should not hesitate to give him some starts in Mill's place to see how he fares

Even some spots in September... I know they're talking about McGowan as an option, but you would have to think that he would be on some really tight pitch counts, so they may be better off bringing him out of the pen on a set basis, ie.... every five days

Kyle Drabek 6IP 9H 4R 4ER 3BB 9K 97 Pitches (57-40) Score is tied at 4 and Travis Snider is 2-3 2RBI 2SB @lasVegas51s

One of the better outings for Drabek I suppose. Slowly tryna build game by game.

That was a typo... he didn't have any strikeouts

So in his last 18IP, he has allowed 29H, 7BB and 4K

The walks are somewhat encouraging, but his inability to miss bats is a bit concerning

Hopefully it's a result of him focusing on certain things, such as commanding his fastball and not throwing as many curveballs

From Davidi on sportsnet.ca

Drabek started the season with the Blue Jays and held his own early on, but by the time of his mid-June demotion, he was barely treading water in the deep end. In 14 big-league starts, he was 4-5 with a 5.70 ERA and at the time led the majors with both 52 walks and 10 wild pitches. His WHIP was an abysmal 1.79.

So down he went, ordered to pitch without his cutter to help him improve his fastball command, and also further develop his curveball and changeup.

All the factors combined have pulled Drabek from his comfort zone and forced him to make adjustments. That's why the Blue Jays can look at his last start against Oklahoma City, when he allowed five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and two walks in six innings, and see progress.

"He gave up some early runs, but found a way to stay composed, stay in control relatively and get through six innings," said Farrell. "Even though it was an ugly line, he came away feeling like, 'OK, I got something accomplished within this game.'"

Still, learning to carry an unsightly ERA must be a shock to the system for Drabek, who has experienced very little prior failure in his young career. That is why, much in the same way they did with Brett Cecil, Travis Snider and Brett Lawrie, the Blue Jays are preaching process over end results.

"The conversations between starts really have to be objective between (Vegas manager) Marty Brown and (pitching coach) Tom Signore and Kyle," says Farrell. "If Kyle attaches himself to an ERA, he's going to ride the elevator up and down and his self-worth is going to be attached to what the number of the ERA is. So this has an opportunity to be a tremendous learning experience for Kyle in that regardless of what the numbers state, here is where you are as a pitcher.

"That's where the teaching has to go beyond what the paper says."

I think that last part is important. Too many people in today's day and age are just way too attached to numbers. Don't get me wrong, I don't dismiss numbers outright, I think there a fairly important gauge as to where a player is at, but there are still numerous things outside of numbers that are crucial to the development of a player.

In Drabek's case, it's played out similarly to how I thought it might at the start of the season. I thought Drabek would make the team moreso out of being the showpiece in the Halladay deal as oppose to on Merit. I didn't think he was ready for the bigs yet... Initially he held his own, but in time, well, we all saw what happened. Let's just hope he can re-invent himself down there and come back strong.

Yea, I'm guessing Drabek is working on something specifically since his K rate has dropped big time of late.

3 walks in 6 innings is still not good though, but he seems to be slowly getting better in LV.
