Aaron Hill may still have future with Jays

The Blue Jays have a team option for infielder Aaron Hill next season and they haven't ruled out exercising it.

The second baseman, 29, is hitting just .226 with five home runs in 98 games this season.

A former first-round pick by Toronto, Hill is making $5,000,000 in 2011.

"If he was 38 years old and at the end of of his career that would be one thing. But (the talent) still is in there and he's flashed it at times, it just hasn't come out on a regular basis. I would not rule it out, people thought Edwin Encarnacion wasn't going to come back last year and then he did because he got hot at the end," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said.

"We're always open minded for Aaron still being a long-term part of this team."

Well I don't think he could have said much else.

"He sucks and we want him gone"

This is where Snider would chime in to say you can never go wrong by believing everything your employer says.

Beyond that, yeah, I doubt you'd find any quotes from a GM in August stating that come November, player x should start polishing up his resume. Would do wonders for locker room morale.

Besides, what if all other options fail and bringing Hill back on a renegotiated contract is the only realistic option left. It's not as if there are a plethora of 2B available on the free agent market, and unless Kelly Johnson continues to suck enough that he falls out of Type A status, no way Anthopolous gives up a draft pick for someone who has been almost '2010 Aaron Hill'-ish bad in 2 of the last 3 seasons.

He's gone. AA just wants to keep it classy like any other GM would.

I want him and his .500 OPS gone. Johnny Mac is out-slugging you.

Only way Hill comes back is if every 2B option out there goes elsewhere and he is brought back on a very cheap one year deal.

Otherwise, I doubt he comes back. It is understandable that AA sees untapped upside in someone like EE. At least it is conceivable that he hasn't peaked yet. Hill peaked two years ago and has been absolute trash since. No way AA brings him back unless it is a minor league deal or as stated above a cheap deal due to other options vanishing.

I haven't looked it up, but if Hill isn't the worst player in baseball he's gotta be damn close to it.

I think we all have to accept that 2009 isn't coming back. If anything, that was probably just a fluke year.

Once you lose it in baseball, seldom do you get it back. Stick a fork in him boys, he's done.
