NH pitching coach Pete Walker calls Carreno's slider
exceptional: “When you have a pitch like that that’s a major-league out pitch ...
(cont) your chances of competing at the big-league level and having success are pretty good.”

Nice. Would have liked to see Carreno get a couple starts, but I'll take what I can get there.

Wow. Very exciting. Interesting that Perez starts instead of Carreno. Maybe, after all, they do see Carreno as closer material.

Looks like AA reads RealGm now.

I had a feeling that the Jays would push Carreno to the pen.
Perez will probably keep that spot warm until McGowan/Drabek are ready to come up.

Wonder whether it's also a way to allow Carreno to keep his innings relatively low; he took a big, scary jump in IP last year (47 above his career high, and 58 above his previous season), so they might be hesitant to run him up to 160 or thereabouts, especially as his pitch count has escalated.

I can't say that I hate him going straight to the bullpen, I'm just excited to see him up.

I think it was 47 up from the previous season, as 2009 he had 79 in low A and 11 in short season, but I agree, this would seem to be a more logical reason for throwing him in the pen at this point.
Maybe ultimately they view him as being better suited in a pen role, but I'm sure he'd still get at least a look next spring at a rotation spot

i think they should be giving Perez a shot to start.. he has always been a starter throughout the minors, and deserves a shot.

Watching Mills pitch was painful.

Disagree...Perez was never a particularly good starter, but showed that he could be fairly capable out of the 'pen.

Carreno has better stuff to be a starter than Perez. He's been much more effective during his MiLB career so far.
I'm just excited to see all these young guy in the lineup.
That said, I expect to see Perez and Carreno both in the bullpen after September and I expect to see Drabek get 5 or 6 starts in the month as they give him another shot.

I think he should be given a shot to start. Let him fail as a starter first, and see what you got and go from there. However, my comment was more in response to having him start over Carreno.

I wonder how the Jays project him long term...
It's pretty crazy at all the great arms we seem to have!

Ahhhheeemmmm!!! WHO CALLED IT!
All kidding aside, I'm super happy about this call-up. Whoever posted about the slider or "slurve".... it is FILTHY! Can't wait to see him buckle a couple of big-leaguers.

I'd like to see Carreno start as well, but the Jays could use a lights out closer as well. Hopefully they pitch him in long relief until the end of the season so he still gets some innings in. Then put him in the mix for the rotation next year or if he misses out on that put him in the pen.

Ah, I heard yesterday that Joel Carreno was getting called up, but had no idea that Perez would be starting. I like that Carenno is going to the bullpen for now, but I'm not too fond of Perez starting either. I think he's been playing very well in relief and would like to see him stay there. Oh well.

Agreed, but I'm sure it's just temporary until McGowan or Drabek are ready. I think Carreno is best suited in the pen anyway.
