Anthopoulos: Bautista slam dunk for MVP

So, is Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista this year’s AL MVP?
Alex Anthopoulos is biased, obviously. But the Jays’ GM believes that if the season ended right now, it would be no contest. Bautista wins.
“I don’t even think it’s close,” Anthopoulos told QMI Agency, prior to Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
The way Anthopoulos sees it, Bautista brings much more to the table than just MVP stats — though his stats definitely are MVP-worthy.
“On and off the field you can’t find anybody more complete than him,” said the Jays’ second year GM. “His work ethic, community work, character in the clubhouse, helping out teammates, they’re all first-rate. And his performance on the field has been as good as it gets ... defensively, offensively, changing positions in the middle of the season. I mean, check off all the boxes.”
Stats-wise, there’s an argument to made that the numbers alone put Bautista, who hit a home run against the Royals Wednesday to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth inning, in driver’s seat. He leads the American League in five major offensive categories (prior to Wednesday’s game); home runs (36), walks (103), on-base percentage (.456), slugging percentage (.645) and on-base plus slugging (1.101). He’s also second in runs (91). The New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson (first in runs and RBI), Boston infielder Adrian Gonzalez (first in average) and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury are also gaining a lot of notice. (If Bautista should win, he would only be the second Blue Jay ever to win the award. George Bell won back 1987).
But here’s the kicker. While Anthopoulos and pretty well all of Bautista’s teammates believe their man is the ‘The Man’, there are some major obstacles for the Jays’ outfielder to overcome in his bid to win the AL MVP award, even if his numbers remain strong until the end of the season.
There’s the question of playing on a team that is not post-season bound. In the last 20 years, only two AL MVPs played on teams that did not qualify for the post-season, Alex Rodriquez of the Texas Rangers in 2003 and Cal Ripkin Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles in 1991.
That’s a pretty clear indication that the writers who vote on the award (the MVP Trophy is chosen by the Baseball Writers Association of America) tend to favour players on playoff-bound teams.
And there’s the question of playing in Canada.

There's also the problem of the American media not wanting to vote for a player who they suspect to be a roider and sign-stealer.
Still, he's got a shot I think.

Honestly, I don't care so much about these awards anymore...
Writers have proven time and time again that they are biased and petty
Wake me up when the players themselves dictate who is most deserving of these honours...

Baseball is the most stat oriented sport out there, yet when it comes to the MVP award winning matters? I just don't get it, Felix won the CY young award last year with only had 14 wins. So why can't Jose, the clear cut best player in the AL be the MVP. Statistically speaking Bautista is the most valuable player.

The good news for Bautista is that there is no consensus among writers who think team record matters for MVP voting between Granderson/Ellsbury/Gonzalez and even Verlander. Hopefully those 4 split those votes and then everyone who cares about who the actual best player in baseball is will vote for Bautista.

Uh, you think the players would be better? They're even more uninformed in every way possible.

At the same time, they might not vote Derek Jeter a gold glove though.

What are you basing that on?
But yes, I think the players would do a better job...
(or at the very least...I think fans would be more accepting of the process)
And I'd argue that the awards would be more meaningful to the winner if voted so by his peers

Basing it on common sense, really. The players would be terrible. They'd overwhelmingly vote for A-Gon, while Bautista would be lucky to crack the top 5.

You're giving your opinion...and presenting it as though it's fact
It doesn't make for a very good discussion

Actually, basing it on common sense they'd overwhelmingly vote for Bautista, and A-Gon would be lucky to get half as many votes.

I think it's silly to think the writers value AVG and RBI more than the players.
If players were objective, there was no campaigning, and there were no convening forces to better articulate player value, I think Gonzalez would run away with the player ballot. I'm not trying to present it as fact but find an opposing view hard to understand. Whatever.

You've given no reason as to WHY the players would favor Gonzalez over Bautista...

Shouldn't be too difficult to put two and two together.

Evermore: why would players do a lousy job of voting for the awards?

Evemore: that doesn't explain why you think the players would do a lousy job

I would say Batista was the favorite to be MVP at the all star break but he has slowed down somewhat.
As much as I hate the yankees, Granderson is the MVP in my opinion. Class act too.

Bautista will win. OBP, SLG, OPS matter to all these guys now. If a batter leads in both OBP and SLG, it'd be absolutely ridiculous if he lost to a different batter.

Of course it's ridiculous. And of course, it will happen. Granderson will win MVP despite being dwarfed in actual value by Bautista.
