Thought this was worth noting simply because it's fairly rare to see managers acquired via transaction...the last instance I can remember occurred nearly a decade ago, with Randy Winn going to Seattle as compensation for Lou Pinella, who became the (Devil) Rays' manager. Must be a Florida thing.

Also insane that the Marlins are reportedly sending a good prospect, name yet unknown, for a guy who has managed to lead a frequently-good team in a frequently-bad division to the playoffs just once in five years, with three sub-.500 seasons along the way.

The Jays really have to do a better job of taking advantage of the Marlins in the offseason.

If Guillen yields a decent prospect, I think its safe to say AA should be able to get away with trading an unsold XXXL Aaron Hill jersey from the Jays store for Ramirez.

The RSN ticker said he's been given his release...

Deal is now completed; the Marlins will receive two minor leaguers as compensation, identities as yet unknown.

The jersey would be worth more than Guillen and wouldn't carry the same price tag.

Now that the Marlins are threatening to spend money, and the Pirates have started spending a bit more, does this mean the Jays have a chance to be in the bottom quartile of spending on a major league roster next year?

Buck and what's his name were ladling out excuses again tonight why it won't be time this off-season to sign a significant free agent

I'm thinking he can pilfer Logan Morrison from them. We don't really need him, but there are worse things than have a spare 800 OPS 24-year old.

The Jays already had the 8th lowest payroll in baseball this season: http://content.usatoday.com/sportsdata/ ... /team/2011

So maybe?

This had been rumored for a long time and I thought it was a joke.

There's always an excuse every year for this organization to not spend the money. It's been a long-time since the Burnett/Ryan off-season spending and even then that was not the same as going out after some top tier free agents.

At some point, you've got to jump in, can't keep waiting on guys. Romero/Morrow have the potential to be a great 1-2 starting combo and with some other guys, they just have to take a leap of faith at some point. One power bat added to this team would be huge. That and a Closer.

They are reliever Jhan Marinez and infielder Osvaldo Martinez, ranked 4th and 5th respectively on BA's rankings for Marlins prospects prior to the season.

Maybe this is another untapped market that AA can try and exploit. Sign highly regarded (or even just... regarded) managers and trade them for prospects.

All it would cost is money.

His contract was up and it was made public that he will not return to the White Sox.

Why didnt the Marlins just wait until the offseason and sign him anyway, "for no compensation" :-? They are so impatient. What the hell is Ozzie gonna be able to do now, that he couldn't later. Season is over.

head case Manager, joins the most excitable ownership.

How long will this last?

No manager is worth giving players up for. Stupid, stupid publicity stunt. I understand the Marlins are changing their whole marketing strategy to bring in more Hispanic fans.

Problem is that Larry Beinfest is one of the best minds in the business. He has done a hell of a job with the limited resources granted to him by his piece of **** owner Jeffrey Loria and his scum midget stepson David Samson.

This move seems to be dictated by those two crooked morons more then anything else.
