OT: Tony Reagins resigns as Angels GM

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Sat Oct 1, 2011 12:16 am

Tony Reagins has resigned from his post as the general manager of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the team announced Friday afternoon. Of course, owner Arte Moreno said in a statement that they felt a "change was needed." So this was obviously a forced resignation.

Reagins, 44, had been the GM since October of 2007. The California native worked his way up from the bottom of the organization all the way to the top. He began in 1992 as an intern. By 2002, he was the director of player development and was then promoted again to GM five years later.

"Throughout his career, Tony has meant a great deal to this organization, and represented the Angels with the utmost loyalty and dedication. He will always remain part of the Angels family,” added Moreno.

Reagins had a hand in developing some very successful major-league talent, including Jered Weaver, Howard Kendrick, Erick Aybar and Kendrys Morales. In recent years, however, he's been maligned for overpaying for veterans, specifically the offseason acquisition of highly-paid Vernon Wells from the Blue Jays for slugging catcher Mike Napoli last year -- not to mention the disaster that was the Scott Kazmir trade.

Bringing in Wells was the nail in the coffin.

Getting Wells will prevent LAA to make a legit run at Fielder, he could have been a really nice fit there. I won't complain though as this removes a potential bidder.

Kazmir was even worse than Wells. At least they dumped Rivera's 5.5 mil in that one.
Kazmir had 35 starts at .3 WAR at a cost of 28.5 mil! Holy Crap!

Hard to remember but the Kazmir for Zambrano trade was once called the steal of the decade... how times change...

More like the banana peel he slipped on. Or the casual use of the phrase, "I don't know."
