OT: Papelbon signs with Phillies

Post#2 » by MGD24 » Fri Nov 11, 2011 7:23 pm

Papelbon is no longer in the AL East and becomes the closer the Phillies needed this year.
So I guess that's a good thing for the Jays that Boston is getting weaker.

@JSalisburyCSN:
The Phils and Papelbon have reached agreement sources tell CSNPhilly.com. Pending physical.

I think Yogi deleted that thread but for some reason my post is still there.

Anyways, good news for the Jays. Means we aren't signing Papelbon to a terrible contract, and he'll be out of the AL East.

So far all it means is that we've done nothing. Darvish looks like he's staying in Japan, and the team is full of excuses - "This one is too hot." "This one is too cold".

No deals beyond X years, no pricey relievers... we're wll on track to paying for Nadir Mohammed's bonus.

no, i merged the thread that MGD24 made.

this mean that Madson's a potential Toronto target?

and dagger, i think you're kind of off. I don't see the Jays paying $12 mil/year for a closer. they're probably looking at a top tier closer, but at a slightly lower price and lower duration. and i don't blame them.

Bad for the Jays, but good at least that he's not in the AL East.

bad for the Jays we're not giving out a contract to a reliever that is almost guaranteed to be an albatross?

if doing nothing means not giving out crazy deals that will hurt the team than i hope we do nothing all off season.

As for the Phillies it might seem crazy to call them misguided after all the success they've had but sooner or later these bad moves will add up and having Lee and Halladay is not gonna mean anything when you have like 50 million in dead weight on your payroll every year.

no look at the track record of relievers getting multi year deals, there's Rivera and there's everybody else. I'd put the odds at like 85-90% that Papelbon never lives up to that deal.

There are only a handful of closers I'd give Mariano type money to. Papelbon as much as I'm not a fan of him...is one of them.

Word is that there may also be a vesting option to push the deal over 60 million.

If I were the Phillies, I'd be more concerned with extending Hamels contract and finding a SS. They better have more money to spend.

The deal includes a vesting option that could take it beyond $60 million for the 30-year-old, the source said.

If finalized, the contract would be the largest total package ever signed by a relief pitcher. The previous high was the five-year, $47 million deal signed by B.J. Ryan with Toronto in December 2005.

The $12.5 million average annual value of the deal would be tied for the second-highest ever signed by a reliever.

Mariano Rivera's $15 million a year, in each of his last two contracts, ranks No. 1.

LOL ridiculous. only way papelbon lives up to that contract is if he pitches lights out for the next few years while hitting like 30 home runs in the process, leading the phillies to a world series.

Bautista outplays his contract by more than $70 million over the next four seasons (2013-2016).

Ruben Amaro should never be allowed to deal with contracts. The only reason the Phillies aren't in worse shape financially is because Halladay took a massive discount to extend with them.

At least Ruben Amaro running the Phillies into the ground increases the odds of Halladay returning to the Jays to end his career.

Amaro: "Wait, guys, wait. You're telling me that we can get Papelbon for only 6 million more? Where do I sign????"
