That being said, the Jays will attempt to wheel and deal this week. Anthopoulos has his support staff in place. Does he think he’s close to a deal?

“I thought about it on the plane,” he said. “We’ve got some things that are at the five-yard line. There are some things that are available to us that are intriguing and interesting. I’m just struggling with them. There are things that we can do and I guess when you know they’re tough then you know they’re probably fair on both sides. I have a few that I could do right now. There’s frameworks of deals that can be made, both trades and free agency, that both sides would have to decide if they want to do it, but I think both sides are intrigued.”

Seems like pretty significant deals. What I would give to get a hold of AA's blackberry...

Wheelin' and dealin' is all AA can do, since those cheapskates at Rogers refuse to spend any money. They trade away the ridiculous salary of Vernon Wells, only to consider the move profitable, and invest none of that money back into the team.

You know what would be profitable Rogers!?! Getting some asses in your 55,000 person stadium! If the Blue Jays are a winning team, a playoff team, I could see our attendance almost doubling. Would it happen the first year, right away? Probably not, but that's because the Jays/Rogers have proven nothing to their fans, except that for 11 years, they've been more than content with the status quo. The Jays/Rogers just don't get it....that's the saddest part.

I'm **** excited. It's going to be a helluva week with the Winter Meetings taking place as well as NBA free agency opening on the 9th. I can't wait to see what AA pulls out of his hat this time...

First of using the idea of the Wells contract as the Jays being cheap is just weak. That was one of the biggest contracts in the league that Rogers gave. Secondly, they just didnt trade away Wells and not spend that money. They did trade away Wells deal and the 86 million or whatever it entailed but they gave Bautista 64 million, they spent 10 million on Hech, gave Philly 6 million in the Halladay deal, signed a few highly regarded international players, massively expanded their scouting department, hired the most scouts in the league, were top 5 in bonuses paid out for the draft, offered Chapman 30 million and also recently took on almost 6 million just so we could get Colby Rasmus.

This is a point guys like Parkes and Stoeten have made repeatedly. The Jays are spending money smartly. If you want to whine and bitch then go ahead. But youd have to be blind if you still think that this team hasnt taken a massive step in the right direction. Rogers was cheap in the past but they ve been spending lately.

Even when you account for draft and international spending, the Jays are still below average among major league teams due to how little they spend on the major league payroll.

And Stoeten criticized Rogers just last week for having the Jays behave as a small market team: http://www.drunkjaysfans.com/2011/11/co ... y-ass.html

How much a team spends is directly related to its baseball success. I'm sorry that fact has upset you.

That fact doesn't upset me.

The fact that there was already 2 threads directly discussing rogers spending in the last page and half, and probably another half dozen or so that have been derailed into that same discussion on the first page is upsetting. It took all of two posts in this thread to get that discussion humming again. Can we keep that discussion to it's particular threads (maybe even sticky one) and actually talk baseball in the baseball threads? Crazy idea, I know.

Really? That's what you got out of this article? That its ownership thats blocking these deals? That AA is just waiting for his PDA to buzz hoping for an answer from ownership to say "Yes" or "No"?

You didn't get that AA has deals in place that could push forward his plan a bit and help build a winner?

You also didn't get that when the Jays signed Vernon Wells, AJ Burnett, BJ Ryan and traded for Troy Glaus that the Jays were merely still rebuilding? Come on.

It seems to. You're certainly wasting time posting about it.

I'm not understanding this at all. It's not like there are games on right now, this is the offseason. You can't exactly have discussions about which free agents the Jays might sign or what trades they might make without commenting on Rogers' commitment to winning in 2012 and how much they are willing to spend (which has historically been little). They are directly related.

Seeing as you don't really know how much there willing to spend, could we not keep the discussions about that, in the two threads we have going addressing that very topic? Or at the very least, wait until the off-season is over and see what happens before we bring it up in every single thread?

And you can actually have discussions about free agency and trades without talking about rogers. It's pretty easy actually, check this out;

I liked the pickup of Jeff Mathis. He's a solid backup catcher, who was well regarded by his manager. I think he'll be invaluable both to JPA and to our young pitching staff. Who knows, it isn't as if Molina was considered a force at the plate, he just happened to have a decent year. Maybe Mathis can tap into some of that Murphy's law, or whatever it is and have a big year too.
