What's your reaction now that the Jays haven't won the post?

What will your reaction be with the Blue Jays don't win the Yu Darvish posting?

I'll be happy. We shouldn't be spending that much money on an unknown player.

What's your reaction now that the Jays haven't won the post?

Post#1 » by torontoaces04 » Mon Dec 19, 2011 7:22 pm

This off-season, more than ever, there is a divide amongst the fan base. Some of us would like to see AA and Rogers open up the coffers and spend big bucks. Others would like to see AA stay the course, managing the teams finances in a fiscally responsible manner, reflective of the attendance of Jays games. The divide amongst some Jays Fans could not be much bigger. While one Fan would like to see us sign Darvish to a 7yr deal (50m+105m)** and then follow suit by signing Fielder to a 7yr deal (175m)**, another wants us to sign neither. Then there are the fans who want one, but not the other. Needless to say, there are a lot of different opinions on potential Jays moves this off-season.

It seems to me that the majority of Fans here have already decided it's a given that we will be winning the Yu Darvish posting. Nobody knows for sure until it's announced by the Commissioners Office. It would not surprise me if some of the people here have already ordered their Darvish jerseys.

With the announcement less than 7 hours away, I pose the following question:

What will your reaction be if the Blue Jays do not win the Yu Darvish posting? I'm not talking about which Rogers services you'll cancel  , more your emotional response as a Fan going forward.

Explain why you voted the way that you did.

** All of these figures are best guesstimates. 15x7=105 (Darvish) and 25x7=175 (Fielder)

I'll rationalize it and spend 48hrs defending AA and Rogers on here, like everything else. :D

at this point, definitely looks like a toss up between Jays and Rangers...I just hate how all of the media is hyping up the Jays to win when they do not even have any concrete evidence..setting all of the Jays fans up for a major letdown if the Jays do not win the bid..We will find out soon I guess..I know that i'm going to be quite mad if we don't win the bid for him though haa

I think I'de be a little angry, but get over it.

On one side I'm happy regardless if they win/loose as long as they put in a solid bid (which it sounds like they did). Atleast it shows that they are willing to spend a bit.

On the other side (whether our bid was succesful), I'm sort of indifferent to actually getting him or not just because it's such a huge risk that far from gaurantees us any success (that's a lot of money for an unproven pitcher). I suppose I'de lean to being slightly upset as we wouldn't be adding talent that could potentially help us.

So over all I'de be slightly upset that we arn't potentially adding talent. But I'de get over it because it atleast shows that the Jays will spend.

I'd laugh at first if this was true - our bid wasn't even "big". It would be so Rogers. Then I'd get mad that they left this hanging for a week to soak up a lot of free publicity by jerking around the fans. It's one thing not to raise expectations, it's quite another to let them grow and then dash them.

I'd blame twitter. Can't exactly blame AA for not wining a blind auction

i'd be pretty pissed at first because personally i feel that this move will consider the jays a legit contender in the AL east (even more then they are already) but i'd hope for AA to sign edwin jackson or a proven starting pitcher if we don't get darvish

I'd be pissed at the Jays for letting everyone get their hopes up for no reason. If they don't think they won, they should have leaked it. Like every other team that know they never.

Yeah, I think I'd be more disappointed than angry. I've still been cautiously optimistic, but there's been so much fake news that it's hard not to get a little excited. It's a bidding process, so you can't really be upset if they don't get him. As long as they made a solid attempt. It's all you can ask for.

In the instant I heard, I'd be upset. Maybe even mad considering we've been lead to believe we're favourites for the past week. I'd carry the feeling until I saw his results. If he performs exceptionally well, and on a team we'd have to beat out for a wild card spot no less (assuming Rangers), then I'd probably watch less games and lose some passion for the Jays.

I couldn't just stop watching the Jays on the spot considering his risk. On the other hand, if we keep targeting/acquiring players who I know won't help us win (not Darvish)... that's more frustrating.

I'll be really annoyed that I spent all last Thursday refreshing Twitter rather than working. But I'll still await AA's off-season moves before getting angry. If we don't get Darvish or Fielder (or Hernandez for that matter), then for gods sake trade Bau for a boatload of prospects. The Raps have shown how easy it is to get into the rebuilding rhythm. Let's go back to AA's original Tampa Bay inspired plan.

Actually if you think about it, it makes sense that Texas might actually win this bid. All throughout the Winter meetings, AA tried to play poker by claiming all this time that they are going to be a cost controlled team. I really think he might've overplayed his hand and thought that "the perception" was that the Jays weren't going to bid very high.

Texas probably stuck with their number, and didn't bother to change it, while AA thought his poker face might've helped "lower" their price.

Really, we don't know and we'll just have to find out in a few hours.

I think that depends on the situation, tbh.

If the Jays put in a 51M bid, and got beat out by Texas bidding 60M, I'll be okay with that. We legitimately tried to get Darvish, and somebody else beat us to him. That's fine.

What will get me upset (and you can blame AA for this one) is if the Jays only put in a lowball bid - if they bid something like 20M, a figure that they knew wasn't going to win. That says something entirely different about the direction the Jays are going.

Also, to the OP: Your numbers are way off. There's no way we're paying Darvish 15/season. More like 10. So it'd be more like a 120/7 (or more likely a 110/6). Same with Fielder. 150/6 is more probable.

If that was the case I have an extremely hard time believing that the team would let the media make our entire fanbase believe that we won for some ~4/5 days now. They would have leaked something out to the media to temper expectations if in fact they did nothing but enter a low-ball bid that had no chance of winning. That is just common sense.

That says something entirely different about the direction the Jays are going.

Sorry, but it could also mean that they think Darvish simply isn't worth any more.

I never took it seriously to begin with. My stance on this was always "let Ken Rosenthal report it and I will believe it". If some random clowns on Twitter who have no credibility start reporting on something that only a handful of people IN THE WORLD have any knowledge on, then you don't blame the guys "reporting" it you blame yourself for believing it.

Do I want Darvish on the Jays? Absolutely. Do I think there is a chance? Sure. Am I expecting it to happen? No. Until there is an official press release, report, etc, I simply won't believe it. Very unlike the 2009-present Jays to do something like this (spending an excess of $100M for a player who has yet to throw a MLB pitch). I'd have to see it to believe it.
