) ... all those guys. Carter wasn't just a player, he was a life force. Maybe he came across as being just too conscious of his wholesome image, but I think it was (mostly) genuine.
So for him to be felled so young by such a debilitating disease is, as Alanis would say, "ironic". But, like rain on your wedding day, it really just sucks.
The particular types of brain tumors from which Carter is suffering are inoperable and are the same that eventually proved fatal for former baseball notables Bobby Murcer, Dick Howser, Johnny Oates, Dan Quisenberry and Tug McGraw.
That seems ... odd.
