Source: Prince is very close to a nine-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, according to sources.

This came out of nowhere.
Guess Boras finally found a sucker.

On the plus side, we probably weren't going to have to compete with the Tigers for a wildcard spot, anyway. They can have their perennial division championship.

Fixed.

So who plays first base? Really screws them up during inter-league play.

it didn't really come out of nowhere and made much sense for the Tigers I suppose (but not for that money) after Victor Martinez tore his ACL a week or so ago and would be lost for the upcoming season.

That is too much money. The Jays stayed away for good reason.

Yeah, I don't think Jays fans can be disappointed here. That is a ton of years to be invested in any player, much less a 1B/DH. AA was not going to come close to competing with that offer, and I don't blame him.

I just wish the Jays had a better 1B option than Lind, even if it isn't Fielder.

It's too rich - if it's all guaranteed money. Let's see what the fine print says. And let's not forget that this means another Al team takes a further stride forward. YAnkees, Rangers, Angels... Red Sox, Rays, maybe Cleveland still better than the Jays...

Not only do we look like a fourth place team, but we might regress further in the win loss column because teams ahead of us are that much stronger.

so in other words, the Jays lost out you're saying not shelling out the 214 million? lol You're too much.

How about going after Konerko? Even though hes old, he has been doing quite well and only has 2 years left on his deal (age 36 and 37).

Miggy use to play third didn't he? Miggy must be smiling. Almost a guarantee for 50 bombs. Avila 30 bombs too

No you jackass, I'm saying they lost out by not doing other things to remain competitive, like getting a decent bat behind Bautista or an upgrade at 2b or a clear second starter.

Quite surprising. The contract is huge, but I'm guessing it took a big one like that to completely come out of nowhere and acquire him over the Nationals or Rangers.

I'm assuming Cabrera and Fielder will switch back and forth from 1B and DH throughout the season. Cabrera seems too fat to play 3rd again.

you actually didn't say that. You said by essentially not going after/matching the ridiculous contracts offered to Fielder, Pujols, CJ, Darvish I suppose (but he hasn't pitched a lick in the MLB), we have regressed. Why bring up the Red Sox I don't know - they haven't done much in the offseason and the Jays look to be better. The Rays - ditto. ps. name calling is for pansies. 8-)

WOW. Can he even play nine more years? He's so fat I bet his legs can barely support him :P He has to DH in year 5 or 6 of that contract.

Would have been nice to get him, that's for sure. Personally, I think he'll be effective for all 9 years, but I understand the hesitation.

I just don't see the Tigers being a sustainable team.

loving the over-the-top reactions from guys like Greg Brady.
like Fielder suddenly puts the Tigers are perennial champions.
These big money contract can often come back and bite the club in the arse.

Very surprised. Tigers weren't even in the mix at all, but then again I don't see this deal happening if V-Mart isn't out this year. Next year Miggy/Fielder/V-Mart....Damn!, still very surprised a team gave him 9 years.
