Damn, that means no Uehara. Perhaps he vetoed the reported deal they had in place.
I think Cordero is this year's Rauch, to be honest. His numbers have been declining for years and were very unimpressive last season in a bad division. Sure, the Jays have a lot of good relievers to replace him if he sucks, but if John Farrell keeps going to him in high leverage situations like he did with Rauch, it's going to be a bad situation.

To bad this means no Koji for sure oh well hes a FA next year maybe we can sign him then. Pen looks really solid as long as Cordero is used right he should be fine.

Cordero isn't as good as he used to be but hes better than rauch at any point in his career. If this BP isn't overworked like it was last year (need 2 of morrow, alvarez, mcgowan, drabek and cecil to step up and regularly pitch into the 7th inning) then it is going to put up some insane numbers.

I hope AA's turning his attention toward getting a bat now.

Dunno about this. I actually liked Frasor as the set-up man. I guess they'll split that duty.

Wow, to go from potentially getting Uehara to overpaying for Cordero is a huge downgrade. Damn you Koji and your no trade clause!
Not a fan of this move. Since 2009, Cordero's K rates have declined each year and while his control improved dramatically last season, he is still a career 4.0 BB/9 reliever. This was the closest thing to buying high that AA has done in three off-seasons, and since there is no Type-B crutch to fall on, I really don't see the point in this move. The Rays got a 30 HR/100 BB first baseman on a one year deal for a couple of million more than what Cordero will get paid.

Anthopoulos doesn't anticipate making a move to upgrade starting rotation before start of Spring Training. #BlueJays

More AA: "I wouldn't expect us to do anything else. Maybe adding a reliever is probably the only thing I think we have a chance at doing."

Great signing, just solidifying the bullpen even more! I would of obviously have loved it if it was Uehara but Francisco is still quite good. I dont know how his numbers were unimpressive, at his age i think they were quite good. His whip was the lowest its been since his 2002 season, and his ERA was quite low as well. His strikeout numbers werent that high but he was still able to put up 37 saves! Great move.

Pena really? Have you seen those splits? Pena is going to suck a lot. Solid signing its cheap if does well he can be flipped at the deadline he also handles LH pretty well. Basically no risk in this one.

How is 37 saves and a 2.45 era unimpressive? Comparing him to Rauch is a joke, we are talking about one of the most consistent closers over the past 5 seasons with, well... Rauch. Great signing.

Rauch looked far better going into last year than Cordero looked going into this year. Rauch actually had a good season in 2010. Cordero hasn't had a good one in three years.
Look past the name at his peripheral stats and you'll see the guy is very overrated. The hope, I guess, is that he has a good season and they'll be able to trade him. But there's little reason to expect much good out of Cordero. I don't know why they bothered wasting this much cash on him.

I wasn't advocating signing Pena necessarily, just that I felt the Jays spent too much on a declining reliever rather than spending it on someone who could have been an upgrade to the offense (which Pena, or others still out there, could have been). Cordero just seems like a pointless signing to me. Uehara would have been fantastic, and I'm glad AA inquired, but Cordero is not a suitable back-up option, IMO. If Farrell uses him as he did Rauch, and Cordero's ratios don't show signs of improvement, it could spell disaster.

Doubt there's any money left for a bat. They've used all of it adding to the bullpen with good to mediocre arms.
Of course, to acquire Manny Ramirez, you don't exactly need much money.

I agree Uehara would have been way better I would have been very excited to get him. This is an decent fall back move, really if he sucks the pen is good enough to hide him down in the 6th or 7th inning if he has a good comeback year Jays get a solid reliever at a decent price.
