Top 100 Prospects list to be unveiled tonight

The question is simple: Who will be the next big thing in baseball?

David Price, Jason Heyward, Mike Stanton, Buster Posey and Jeremy Hellickson were among the many recent up-and-comers to hit the ground running in the Major Leagues. Who might have such an impact in 2012? Find out Wednesday night with the unveiling of MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects list.

This year's edition, the first to expand from 50 to 100 players, will be unveiled Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET on MLB.com and MLB Network. The annual ranking of baseball's biggest and brightest young talent is compiled from industry sources, including scouts and scouting directors, and based on analysis of players' skill sets, high upsides, closeness to the Majors and potential immediate impact to their teams. The list only includes players with rookie status in 2012.

Noticed Jake Barrett is #38 on the top 50 draft prospect list. James Paxton made the top 100 prospect list at 77

Marisnick and Syndergaard won't; outside chance that D'Arnaud or Gose will be.

Little surprised that Nicolino didn't crack the bottom of the top 100.

Think Marisnick is going to RF. Thats what I read on the Blue Jays site.

The fact that Drew Hutchison is not on this list, makes the list itself questionable.

There's probably something about this that I'm not understanding, but this list doesn't exactly jive with the talk that the Jays have the best minor league system in baseball, does it?

Wouldn't 4 in the top 100 with none in the top 20 be about average?

It's the depth of the system. Plus, a lot of Toronto's top prospects are lower-minors guys who haven't hit the big time yet...Syndergaard could be top 10 next year if he has a big season, as could a couple of the other pitchers and Gose/Marisnick. Obviously, they all won't be, but we have a bunch who have the skill to take the leap.

These lists are usually very different than ones you'll get from other sites. I believe Mayo's lists are more comprised from player scouting and development and polls.

I figured as much, but I also saw some guys with ETAs of 2013/2014 when skimming through, so I wasn't sure.

Depth is great, but it would be nice to have a bona fide stud in the pipeline with all of this talk about how great our farm system is. Or if not, then have more than 4 guys in the top 100. This is oversimplifying, but shouldn't every team have about 3, on average?

Agreed. But don't forget the graduations of Lawrie and Alvarez.

There are probably 5-6 pitchers on the Jays that could slide into 80-100 and the fact there are so many hurts them a bit on these lists IMO. Hutchison, Nicolino, Syndergaard, Norris, Sanchez, and McGuire could each and have been by some listed in that area.

It's interesting how many '11 draft picks made the list.

Is Manny Banuelos really that good or is he just another product of the Yankee hype machine. His whip was real high. Sure he got alot of Ks but alot of BBs too.

Yeah, Lawrie is definitely a "bonafide stud". John Sickels said if he still qualified, he might have him ranked #2 behind Harper.

This is a comparison between Manny Banuelos previous year (with stops at high a and double a - didn't include his rookie ball numbers because he only had 5 IP)and Drew Hutchison's year last year. There's just an 8 month difference between them.

I'm not an expert evaluator I just like looking at stats and making stupid analysis. I haven't seen either guy pitch before other than YT. Would be interesting to hear the justification behind the disparity in rankings though.
