KLaw Ranks Jays System 3rd Overall...

3. Toronto Blue Jays

One of the many reasons criticism of Rogers Communications, the owner of the Blue Jays, for being stingy with free agents is so ignorant is that the club has spent aggressively in the amateur markets during the past three years, grabbing high-ceiling high school players and Latin American prospects by stockpiling picks and paying whatever it took to sign those players. They are the organization most likely to be No. 1 on this list next winter.

Law's obviously trying to get re-hired by the Jays...

But seriously he usually does say a lot of good things about Toronto. Always nice to hear though.

What did it take to sign sign those players? $1 million?

In the 2 years before AA took over the Jays spent around 9 million on the draft and 2 million on International free agents for a total of 11 million. Since AA has taken over the Jays have spent 22.5 million on the draft and around 20 million on international free agents for a total of around 42.5 million. The Jays have cut around 27 million from the payroll since 2008 but that still leaves an excess 4.5 million that Rogers has dumped into the club. Obviously not a ton but they are at least doing something.

D'Arnaud 6th overall is pretty crazy. I definitely did not think he'd be on anyone's top 10 overall. Serious Jake love too.

After the phenomenal season he had last year, d'Arnaud should have been in the top 10.

I actually didn't mean I thought it was too high, even if my pretty crazy comment made it sound that way. I'm just used to the top 10 going more for super upside, so Profar, Bundy, Cole, Montero, Starling types over closer and slightly lower ceilings like D'Arnaud, who end up in the teens and 20's. Really there are usually 2-5 guys at the front (3 this year I'd say) and really how you rank the next 10-20 guys in any given year is all just perspective. I'm not sure how you make a 100% definitive case for any one being more valuable than any other. Not that it isn't fun to try.

Maybe I'm just full of it. Anyway, I didn't expect D'Arnaud to crack too many top 10 lists, which is different than whether I think he's a top 10 minors guy. I would never try to make one of these lists myself as so much of my knowledge is based on other people's lists, but I do loves me some D'Arnaud.

Upside has a big say in these lists, but the top 10 guys are usually reserved for guys that have improved every year they've been in the minors and are almost close to reaching the big show.

Keith Law consistently viewed D'Arnaud as a career All-Star catcher, so its really no surprise here.
