Angels wanted Burnett to be their 5th starter.

Since they are in the market for a 5th starter, would you guys give them Cecil for Abreu? Abreu would be great as a DH or LF on our team. Always has a high OBP and close to the lead league in walks.

Imagine him and those long 10 pitch at bats in front of Bautista?

Only bad thing is that he will be 38 in March.

Its pretty unlikely that Abreu will even outperform E5 as a DH, why on earth would we give up a decent asset like Cecil for him? And given his age and awful outfield defence, he won't be an improvement over Thames at LF either.

Sums up my thoughts as well. Even if he was marginally better than E5, giving up a potential 1 WAR reliever or even 2+ WAR starter in Cecil wouldn't be worth it for 1 or 2 years of an extra .3 of a win.

The only way I would take abreu is if I give them a million bucks.

No reason to give up Cecil for Abreu, and I like Abreu (OBP!).

Even as old as Abreu is, I don't trust Cecil as a starter, as he is streaky and not consistent.

A 25 year old LHP who has pitched a winning record in the AL East with a career 4.64 ERA over nearly 400 MLB innings for who?

A 38 year old 0.4 fWAR player that would have to DH and could possibly provide less WAR than our current DH? (Last year he provided 1/3rd of the wins Edwin did)

I'd rather take a chance on the 25 year old (25 to start this season) who has compiled a winning record before hitting the prime of his career. I'm not trying to point out how grossly overrated Abreu is, but rather how undervalued Cecil is. He had 1 bad season after 1 darn good one. He is coming into camp in the "best shape of his life" so personally I'd rather hold him.

Abreu has maybe 2 years left before he retires.

Abreu makes way too much money for what he can deliver now. Why help out the Angels this way anyway?

If EE really has a hard time with Righties, or if Lind has a hard time with Lefties, we can always sub in Francisco or one of Thames/Snider into the mix at DH to help out for this year.

Great point about the money, they would have to send some for the trade to be worth it.

I doubt either young player is made a full time DH.

You realize we don't get Abreu's past production as part of the deal, right? He was great, but nowadays he's washed up and is overpaid. Cecil makes peanuts and is more than serviceable. The Angels would LOVE for somebody to take his contract off their books, never mind giving them a 25 year old starting pitcher on top of the salary relief.

Yeah this would be a pretty bad trade. I'm still pretty sceptical about Cecil, though. His 2010 year wasn't as good as some people seem to remember. If he can get the ground ball/fly ball ratio up a little bit he could be a serviceable starter.

Too bad you can't trade picks. And Mike Stanton isn't Bobby Abreu. One is a fading star grasping at straws and the other is a potential future MVP. 34 HR while having a .356 OBP while being 21 years old is pretty impressive.

I don't appreciate your sarcasm, you could just make counter arguments like the most of us.

I'm just saying you guys are overrating brett cecil way too much.
His ERA in each of his seasons starting are over 4, with his best being 4.2 and his worst 5.3, being that the Blue Jays offense bailed him out most of the 2010 season.
He's very replaceable in the starting rotation, especially with all the prospects we have
He's in the category of a current Jeff Francis, who was good in their best season, but cannot pitch for a win if the offense does not bail him out now-a-days (i,e, atleast 4 runs provided by the offense).

To me he's = Jeremy Guthrie but with more offense provided.
Would you tell me you would take a Jeremy Guthrie and throw him in the starting rotation if given the right price or give the position to prospects to see what they have?

Starting Rotation - Romero, Morrow, Cecil, Alvarez, McGowan.
Do you think Hutchinson or Deck McGuire can take Cecil's place?
Hell I'd rather give Drabek another chance or Kyle Davies rather than Cecil.

Bobby Abreau's contract as big as it is is only 1 year at $9m. He has declined with age, but still gets on base. Now isn't that something that the Jays lacked especially with Bautista rarely being pitched too, or Lind not successfully getting hits off of good pitches? Sending Cecil is low-risk and let's us see what other dimension we can get with an expiring Abreau, who if doesn't retire would like to produce as much as he can in order to ensure a contract for 2013?
