OT: Yankees trade Burnett to Pirates

A.J. Burnett's rocky tenure in pinstripes is over.
The Yankees and Pirates completed a trade Sunday that sends the much-maligned pitcher to Pittsburgh for a pair of minor leaguers. New York is also giving the Pirates nearly US$20 million to cover most of Burnett's hefty salary in a deal that clears the way for the Yankees to sign Raul Ibanez.
The teams agreed to the trade Friday but it was subject to Burnett passing a physical, which he did Sunday at Pirates camp as pitchers and catchers held their first workout of spring training in Bradenton, Fla.
Commissioner Bud Selig also had to approve the deal because of the money involved.
Burnett goes from a perennial World Series favourite to a club coming off its 19th consecutive losing season, a record for the four major pro sports in North America.
"Having played in New York, I can say that playing in Pittsburgh is ... I wouldn't say easier, but just the pressure and everything that comes along with it is less," said Pirates right-hander Jeff Karstens, who also pitched for the Yankees. "That should make his transition here a little bit easier. Anytime you can add a quality arm like that to the staff, it's going to make us better."
The Yankees get 25-year-old right-hander Diego Moreno and 20-year-old outfielder Exicardo Cayones, both low-level prospects.
Pittsburgh will pay $13 million of the $33 million salary due Burnett for 2012 and 2013, a person familiar with the negotiations said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made at that time.

That's too bad. Having AJ traded is going to cost us at least 1 net win this season and improve the Yankees by probably 2-3 net wins.

Just to be double check - the money that the Yankers are paying of Burnett's salary for the next two years doesn't count against the lux tax, yes?

In Burnett's three years with the Jays he produced an 11.3 WAR in 522.2 innings, and he probably underperformed given the lack of innings in 2006 and 2007. With the Yankees, despite throwing over 60 more innings with them than he did with the Jays, he had a 6.4 WAR over three years. The Jays really dodged a bullet by not having him around past 2008, even though he was still good in 2009. He should improve in the NL Central though.
He helped the Yankees win a ring in 2009 and the Yanks can absorb bad deals like that so I'm sure they are not crying about it.

Not a bad deal for the Pirates considering the Yank's are basically paying his entire salary.

I see the pirates flipping him at the deadline to a team that needs starting pitching for the playoffs, if he plays good.

I agree with you. I bet hes happy too, might be able to sign a half decent contract when this one expires.

What is the flipped-to team on the hook for in terms of his salary if they do that?
ie: Do the Yankers pay a portion of his salary every year, or did they just give the Pirates a giant chunk of cash to help them pay it?
I wonder how it would affect tax calcuations on the potential third team (at $6mil/year or at the signed rate?)

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett will undergo surgery on Friday to repair a fractured right orbital bone sustained in a bunting drill, the team said on Thursday.
Burnett was injured Wednesday when he fouled a bunt attempt into his face at the team's spring training field in Florida.
The right-handed pitcher, acquired last month in a trade with the New York Yankees, had preliminary examinations but had gone to Pittsburgh to be evaluated by specialists.
The Pirates said they had no word yet on a possible recovery time for Burnett, who was scheduled to face his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays, Sunday in the National League team's spring training opener.

Wow, he is 35 already! It feels like only yesterday he was one of those young up and coming great pitching talents.

Bizarre that he first turned down a trade to the Angels and preferred Pitt.

I think it has more to do with his wife scared of flying, so LA was not an option.
